Jon Jones said he'd fight anybody, even at heavyweight. Mark Hunt wanted the fight. Why didn't they pick him? Nothing against OSP, but he's not at the top level (yet). His best win is over a washed up Shogun and he lost to Ryan Bader. This is the wrong fight to make. There is no hype behind this fight. It's an easy fight for Jones and if Jones somehow loses, than the UFC will have lost one of their biggest stars and potential high-profile fights like Jones-DC2 and Jones-Rumble will be jeopardized.
This will seriously hurt PPV numbers. Not that many people will buy the card just to see Jones back in the octagon and expecting him to steamroll OSP. All 3 of Mighty Mouse's fans will buy the card too. pettis-Barboza is a very exciting fight to see, but it's a non-title bout so it doesn't have that push behind it. Conclusion: low PPV numbers.
Imagine if they went with Hunt. PPV numbers would be through the roof! Another 1.5m PPV buys. You would have Jones going up to heavyweight, something many wanted to see for a long time now. He would be facing Mark Hunt, former K1-champion, fan favourite and KO artist. That would be a fight with wild speculations about what is going to happen. If jones loses to Hunt, he could still fight DC and Rumble at LHW. If he wins, than Jones' star power would increase tenfold. Imagine Jon Jones get walk-off KOed. Just the possibility of this happening would sell huge numbers.
They made a bad decision giving OSP the fight. They could've made the card a lot more exciting and made a lot more money.
