At this moment, Jon Jones is by far the most overrated fighter in MMA communities like this one. It seems that his layoff boosted his popularity and with all the big hype jobs (Ronda, Conor) and P4P rivals (Aldo, TJ, Cain, Weidman) "exposed" to a certain extent, Jon Jones is the only one left and it seems that people want to truly believe that they're witnessing some great "GOAT" of MMA.
Now I'm not saying that he's not a good fighter but one can be an elite fighter and still be overrated.
It has become some sort of common opinion that he's "the baddest man on the planet" who would just run through most if not all HWs despite the fact that Jon Jones never fought at HW and it looks like he doesn't even have a real intention to do it (he fights OSP on short notice and not Mark Hunt).
I thought that after Conor's recent failure people would be more skeptical about bold predictions how fighters from a lower division would dominant the bigger guys, but the Jon Jones hype still remains the same.
Just like Conor, Jon Jones is a reachy guy huge for his weightclass who uses his physical advantages well. The first time he faced a fighter of similar sized he arguably lost (personally I don't agree with that, I have Jon Jones winning just to be clear on this one) and ended in hospital. And it turns out more and more that Gus isn't anything special and could end up just being a high level gatekeeper. The truth is that fighting guys like Gus will always be problematic for Jones (I'm not saying he loses all of those fights but more often than not ends up in wars that will wear him down as his career proceeds) and at HW he would have plenty of those: tall strong decent boxers who could stuff his takedowns and wouldn't let him bully them. Miočić does everything Gus does better and is bigger, more athletic and more confident.
Jon Jones also got his arm broken by a MW, Werdum would be a very tricky fight for him and I seriously believe Rockhold has the tools to beat him at least 3 times out of 10.
Jon Jones' best win is a drained LHW version of DC. Firas Zahabi said that DC looked better at HW and I agree with him. He's only at LHW because he left the HW division to Cain the guy who DC admits is better than him. At his natural weight (HW) he would be a tougher fight for Jon.
His other wins are mostly big name MWs/LHWs past their prime, guys who're nothing like HWs and wouldn't even be top 15 at that division.
Then there's the stupid talk about him being "GOAT" even though he's halfway into his career and a notorious train wreck of a private life with a record of serious legal problems and alcohol and cocaine addictions. There's nothing to suggest that he will have a consistent career like Fedor, GSP or even Aldo. GOAT is a definite title that should be given to someone who has practically ended his career.
