This has been pretty obvious during the last few years, where Jones goes from looking stellar in one fight to average in the other. He looked amazing against DC at 182 (I think that was the best version of Jones ever) to looking average against OSP. He looked incredible against DC and Alex and then average against Smith and especially Santos.
Is it the roids? or he neglects training when he fights someone who does not seem like a threat? Or do you think he fights to the level of his opponent? (I go with that) I mean, the steroids argument will always be there but we can't be too sure. His wrestling is a little inconsistent too, struggled to take down Santos, while he outwrestled DC who was the best wrestler in the division.
Still, here's hoping he comes out like a terminator and dismantles Reyes, which I think he will.

The reason why he looked average against Smith and Santos is that they're average.

Fight to the level of his competition

In the Santos fight he was either injured going in or got injured (from the leg kicks) during the fight imo

Agreed, or he thought a middleweight would be no problem and barely trained.

When you are the champion for 10 years and you fight THE BEST guy, fight after fight, and guys come from other weight classes to take a shot at you, all over TEN YEARS, it probably gets old, you probably lose focus and/or get bored.

I can't believe I'm about to agree with Schaub but he said something like Jones is at the stage where he just plays, unless he is pissed off and has something to prove.

It’s not the roids he has a license to dope called “pulsing”.

    it’s motivation

Fights down, or up, to the level of competition he is presented with. Quite simple really

Yeah, it makes me cringe to agree with Schaub too, but he did say that with Rogan a couple of times recently I believe. Something like what you mentioned above and also he thinks Jones is like a big cat playing with a mouse or it's food or something. That describes the Smith fight "fer sher."

He's a narcissist who never learns from his mistakes. So he often takes opponents lightly IMO. I don't think he expected Thiago to be able to do anything to him.
