It's crazy but him and Frankie Edgar were suppose to be on Tuf 1. Frankie was going to be a middleweight and Jon Fitch in light heavyweight.

I still think Diego Sanchez would have won but I always wondered if Fitch made it to the show, he could have been fighting in the finale. Instead of the Stephen Forrest fight, it would have been him vs one of those guys depending on what team.

I sometimes wonder if the Stephen Forrest fight was make or break UFC or regardless of the finale the UFC would have made it big anyways.

Well. I'd never heard this story before. Thanks TS.

I hear folks complaining about the Gracies "gaming" UFC 1, that's nothing compared to this. Reality TV indeed.

EDIT: but Fitch moved to MW in 2003. I suppose he would take a LHW spot if that's all they offered him, but it seems like dropping him for Diego sorta suggests he would have been a MW. Maybe there was a game of telephone communication gap somewhere in this story.

    Source.

That’s right. Jon Fitch was scheduled to be on TUF Season One. In fact he quit his job, packed his bags, and was about to get on a flight to Las Vegas when his cell phone rang.

On the other end was a producer informing him that there had been a restructuring of the show and that he had lost his spot.

Currently, Fitch is one of the best wrestlers in the UFC. Hindsight is 20/20, but how did a talented young fighter like him get cut?

Rumor has it that the UFC was all set to bring Fitch onto the show when they were turned on to another young ground and pound expert named Diego Sanchez.

They decided that Diego was the way to go, and they cut Fitch at the last minute.

What made that fight important isn't because of the viewership but the aftermath of it so yeah it's a make or break. Even though Fitch started as a finisher before suffered a trauma from GSP, a sub finish wouldn't be a great sales pitch for the TV execs compared to a bloody war. TUF is a lowbro entertainment show, nobody's watching it for the showcase of skillz.

Frankie at middleweight? Fitch at 205? Outrageous. They probably realized these guys weren't that big or even near that weight class and fucked up

    TUF 1 was perfect.

Like the stars aligning for the UFC.

    Culminating in Griffin/Bonnar. Epic shit.

    This.

Can you imagine him vs middleweight Koscheck or Leben... Guys like Florian and Sanchez were pretty blown up, but they still would have towered over Frankie.

He would have had go come in looking like Rousimar to be able to hang.

Fitch would have dominated a lot of guys on that show at MW.
(205 I’m not so sure how that goes..)

That would have been very different season.

Frankie at MW? Jesus Christ. He looked two weight classes smaller than Oliveira at fucking 145. Would he have weighed in with dumbbells in his pockets and boots on?

Did Fitch train at AKA at the time? Because he and Kos had a weird bromance and refused to fight eachother

It's been a while but I remember had fought light heavyweight fighters like Wilson guivera ( spell check ?) and it was not uncommon for smaller fighters to fight big guys.

Penn fought machida. Riggs was a heavyweight at one point. For the time it was not uncommon. It got me wondering how it went if Fitch fought in the UFC finale.

They had no LW div back then. So for Frankie he'd fight way above his weight anyway, as usual. He'd lose of course, too small. Fitch and Diego did fight later. Fitch won narrowly. I believe Forrest/Bonnar was the perfect fight at the right time. Lightning in a bottle.

Frankie making his debut against Tyson Griffin was awesome, that fight is amazing.

We need to continue this thread, as an alternate-timeline multiverse where Fitch and Frankie win TUF1.

I had never heard this story before. very cool what if

as an aside, I was already a PRIDE and UFC fan but I did not know anything about TUF.

If my memory is correct, I was preparing to watch the Randy-Chuck 2 and Spike ran the entire TUF season beforehand. I thought that the entire thing looked stupid (I think they did group challenges & the losing team had to cut a fighter?) and the quality of the fights were pretty low. When I was watching the Forrest - Bonner fight I thought it was cool but nothing special and kinda low skill.

So when TUF turned out to be the big breakthrough for the UFC (and MMA in general) in the USA I was surprised.

Maybe other people saw it coming but I did not.

Maybe it was more obvious to other people in real time what was happening.

Obviously I am glad that the show was such a big success and launched MMA to the next level

(it has been 15 years and it is quite possible that my memory of the timing of the shows is off)

I heard Goldie or Rogan said way back that Frankie didn't made it to TUF 5 (155ers), but made his UFC debut eventually as a LW. I haven't heard about him trying out in TUF 1 as a MW if ever that's true. That's news to me.

Mike Swick was at LHW and wound up as a WW. Diego a MW wound up at FW. Ken Flo also a MW ended up at FW. The weight cuts on a show like that where you fight several times in a few weeks doesn't allow for big weight cuts.

In a parallel timeline Fitch made the final vs Forrest and laid on him the whole finale to a snoozefest split draw, before dropping to WW and becoming WW GOAT. The fight did shit ratings and the sport remained in the fringes. UFC died and Uncle Dana went bankrupt. The Fertittas went back to the casino business. Scotty Cokes became the face of the sport, and people talked about “treining Strikeforce”. Overeem fought Fedor and became the HW GOAT, and GSP became a UFO researcher who boxercised in the weekends.

Next time, remember you are lucky and say a prayer for our brothers stuck in the wrong branch of the simulation.

Frankie Edgar, even when he fights at 155 he barely cuts weight, he walks around at about 160 when he fights at 155. The idea that he would fight at 185 sounds ridiculous

Kenny Florian competed as a middleweight on TUF 1.
