Jon after 1st Gus fight-morphine had me shaking profusely, mom crying by bedside, couldn't talk, couldn't eat, couldn't use bathroom on my own

One my favorite mma fights.

Round 4 Gus was continuing to piece him up like he did in the previous rounds but toward the end Jon caught him with a good spinning elbow. Gus circled out and then took Jones down again to finish the round. Unfortunately the elbow was enough to secure an otherwise Gustaffson round which gave him the victory on the scorecards when you automatically score the first for Jones as judges tend to do. Alex has a great case for winning the fight but was up against a guy with a big home field advantage. Reyes would later take that blueprint to defeat Jones in most peoples eyes, but again was robbed by the Texas judges (who happened to be highly inexperienced).

Agreed. Jon edged him out because he had more championship experience and dug in deeper.

Gus, Thiago Santos, and Dominic Reyes are the closest fights Jones had and I'd say Dominic Reyes was the only one who actually beat him [statistically this is supported].

this, it was crucial moment, wonder if Gus was asked about this later. I believe he would confirm it. Gus barely survived that round, pity he got caught, he had great 4th round, maybe strongest of all up until that moment, Props to Jones.

I agree, I never thought Santos had an argument to win that fight, it was close in a way but Jon seemed like he was in cruise control the entire fight, while Santos was in the fight of his life.

Gus obviously inflicted the most damage out of the 3 and Reyes had a great argument for winning 3rnds.

With the Reyes fight I never watched it live and already knew the outcome, so i find it hard to properly score a fight once I've been influenced by outside opinions and factors.

Honestly the elbow in the 4th round is way less impactful than it appeared. I've rewatched this fight and in particular that round and Gus recovered well. Jon wasn't even close to finishing, and I dont think the elbow was enough to secure the round that Gustafson was otherwise winning, should've been a 10-10

Gus should've won, same with Reyes
 
Gus won that fight and the fact that people still remember it so after all this time lends something.

I remember Gus winning a fucking close fight. But Jones to me looked like he was fading. Gus came out way better.

After that fight to me, Gus was always the peoples LHW champ. Still one of my favorite LHWs from that era after the golden LHW era.

It likely changed Gus to in the sense draining him mentally getting so close in two absolute wars. Also loosing to Rumble and dealing with Jones roiding and all that. It's like he lost motivation after that.

I see it differently, it looks even worse for Gus when I rewatched it, live I was cheering for him so was a bit biased - No I saw how much damage Gus took in that last minute, did not look well at the end of the round, he was barely standing. He was still in his prime and very durable, so he survived but Jones overtook that round.

He tried to get his security to stop GSP from coming to the press conference by selling the angle that GSP was at the hospital from being badly banged up.

Dana also stole GSP’s championship belt while GSP was in the shower. hah
 
I had Jones eeking it out. He had just a bit more in the tank than Gus and more big moments. It was a very close fight though. Same with Reyes and Santos. It was close enough where those guys just need a little something extra in the rounds and they could have won.

Jon has gotten really lucky in his close fights.
 
He got beat up bad during that fight. But at one point I thought he edged it out because of the spinning elbow in r4 so I can't talk too much shit. He fought more desperately than Gustafsson, like Alex didn't care as much about winning (probably didn't) so that's how it went down.

No one has damaged Jones more, no one has damaged DC more
