Round 4 Gus was continuing to piece him up like he did in the previous rounds but toward the end Jon caught him with a good spinning elbow. Gus circled out and then took Jones down again to finish the round. Unfortunately the elbow was enough to secure an otherwise Gustaffson round which gave him the victory on the scorecards when you automatically score the first for Jones as judges tend to do. Alex has a great case for winning the fight but was up against a guy with a big home field advantage. Reyes would later take that blueprint to defeat Jones in most peoples eyes, but again was robbed by the Texas judges (who happened to be highly inexperienced). The one that rocked Gus' world in round 4
Gus was in control until that 1 moment and never regained an ounce of momentum. It changed the entire fightit didn't change anything and still today i'm baffled at how people fell for their own narrative.
It was a single shot in a round he was losing, it only changed judges' score.
I had Jon 145.
If it wasn't for tha 1 elbow gis would have cruised to victory
The huge spinning one in the 4thwhich elbow?
this, it was crucial moment, wonder if Gus was asked about this later. I believe he would confirm it. Gus barely survived that round, pity he got caught, he had great 4th round, maybe strongest of all up until that moment, Props to Jones.Gus was in control until that 1 moment and never regained an ounce of momentum. It changed the entire fight
I agree, I never thought Santos had an argument to win that fight, it was close in a way but Jon seemed like he was in cruise control the entire fight, while Santos was in the fight of his life.Agreed. Jon edged him out because he had more championship experience and dug in deeper.
Gus, Thiago Santos, and Dominic Reyes are the closest fights Jones had and I'd say Dominic Reyes was the only one who actually beat him [statistically this is supported].
Santos was history's first ever Pyrrhic loser.I agree, I never thought Santos had an argument to win that fight, it was close in a way but Jon seemed like he was in cruise control the entire fight, while Santos was in the fight of his life.
Gus obviously inflicted the most damage out of the 3 and Reyes had a great argument for winning 3rnds.
With the Reyes fight I never watched it live and already knew the outcome, so i find it hard to properly score a fight once I've been influenced by outside opinions and factors.
Honestly the elbow in the 4th round is way less impactful than it appeared. I've rewatched this fight and in particular that round and Gus recovered well. Jon wasn't even close to finishing, and I dont think the elbow was enough to secure the round that Gustafson was otherwise winning, should've been a 10-10I had Jon 145.
If it wasn't for tha 1 elbow gis would have cruised to victory
Jones ducked Rumble, Ngannou and AspinallRumble destroys both. JONY DUCKED AFTER HE SAW WHAT RUMBLE RIP DID TO GUS
That 1 elbow changed everything in that fight. Gus was so close.I had Jon 145.
If it wasn't for tha 1 elbow gis would have cruised to victory
It likely changed Gus to in the sense draining him mentally getting so close in two absolute wars. Also loosing to Rumble and dealing with Jones roiding and all that. It's like he lost motivation after that.Btw, people shit on Gus for being overrated but DC and Jones are both GOATs in their own regard and both of those guys spoke highly about Gus after losing to him. Talking about how their fights with him basically changed them. That says a lot.
I see it differently, it looks even worse for Gus when I rewatched it, live I was cheering for him so was a bit biased - No I saw how much damage Gus took in that last minute, did not look well at the end of the round, he was barely standing. He was still in his prime and very durable, so he survived but Jones overtook that round.Honestly the elbow in the 4th round is way less impactful than it appeared. I've rewatched this fight and in particular that round and Gus recovered well. Jon wasn't even close to finishing, and I dont think the elbow was enough to secure the round that Gustafson was otherwise winning, should've been a 10-10
Gus should've won, same with Reyes
I mean it’s Dana WhiteI remember backstage afterwards Gus said he could do the press conference no problem but Dana urged him to the hospital. Makes sense given the war they had but the main reason for that was obviously because they couldn't have the losing challenger sitting at the presser talking while the champion was at death's door at the hospital.
No one has damaged Jones more, no one has damaged DC moreBtw, people shit on Gus for being overrated but DC and Jones are both GOATs in their own regard and both of those guys spoke highly about Gus after losing to him. Talking about how their fights with him basically changed them. That says a lot.
