Because it's the only time Tom had to really grapple in a fight. He will have to against Jones....and he may have improved plenty but Austin isn't Jones either....and Tom started as a grappler and had many years of experience at this point already, training for probably close to 15 years. Jones at the same age and experience was ragdolling the best fighters on the planet.

If it was so easy to just outgrapple him now, someone (like maybe Blaydes who's taken down plenty of guys in the UFC) mighta tried? We've only seen Tom dominate any grappling exchanges he's had in the UFC. Nothing else.

If the Jones fight doesn't happen then the chances that Tom will go down as the UFC HW GOAT are not that good. He'd probably need five title defenses and a limited tail to his career given the quality of opposition he'll have faced. If he beats Jones then four defenses is enough and even three might be, plus in that case the tail of his career won't matter unless it's just embarrassing.

Agreed, but without a win against Jones Aspinall is unlikely to end up with any wins that compare to Miocic's best wins and Miocic has a couple of vastly overrated wins on top of his actual good wins that all top beating Pavlovich in the public eye. Aspinall will need a definitively better record than Miocic to be UFC HW GOAT without beating Jones.
