I enjoyed watching this, one on one explanation to a fighter, on what he can do and can't do.

that is awesome! First time I hear such thorough explanation from a ref to a fighter.

I am also looking for the video where big John explains the back of the head... anyone knows where to get? (the youtube one was deleted)

How John McCarthy doesn't play a bigger role in the selection of referees and judging is beyond me. I know he has his own referree school, but damn, if everyone stuck with his interpretation of the rules (and actually enforced them) things would be so much better.

Yep, everyone says he's the best in the business. He is by far.

If anyone here has twitter, I recommend following him. He answers a LOT of questions from the fans about the rules and other things. He's incredibly well spoken and polite, he is nothing but a class act all around.

Those two videos should be mandatory watching for all Sherdog whitebelts.
Because the amount of "he was a downed opponent / Why didn't he take a point / That was to the back of the head" bullshit flying around here is too damn high.

I'm glad he brought up screaming as a verbal submission. People continually tell me that's not a thing, but it most certainly is.

Severn has to be the GOAT. yea John I have been meaning to ask you...

yeah, a quick peek at his twitter and many nuggets could be found. I've also bought his book, very good if you're interested in the early UFC and how many of the rules came to pass. We can for example thank John McCarthy that a ref can stop a fight if the fighter isn't intelligently defending himself.

It ain't just the white belts. Most of the people on the forum should watch this, especially if they haven't read the unified rules yet.

What he is saying is everyone starts out as a whitebelt, fix the problem early. You can't go through everyone on the forum.

A lot of people fail to realize that McCarthy helped write a LOT of the unified rules, which is why I think it's really funny when anyone says he's trying to upstage the fighters when he says stuff while reffing, or when he tells people to "not play the game" with the hand off/on the mat for downed status.

It's like... 'dude, he basically wrote the rules... I think he knows what he's doing'
