YouTube - Joe Rogan demonstrates the turning side kick!
Joe's still got some kicks, I was surprised. Figured with how his knees were this was going to be more tell than show.
Seems ok. Captures some subtle points about the technique ie position of body, hip, & knee during full extension.
rogan is a former champ
pretty cool imo
good shit from joe
I think the lizard could take him
He can't make one video where you don't know he smokes pot.
"You see the thing is... oh look a lizard!"
Good technique though. I think rogans getting a little old, but I still think he could rock the low level MMA circuit.
Never trained TKD but I was impressed.
What do the tkd guys think of his form?
Loved the "generates a tremendous amount of torque" part - I can definitely agree with that after getting dropped by a SBK sparring kickboxing a few years back.
It was quite good and i was suprised as i've seen a few bizarre comments from him on TKD making me question what he trained. Maybe he was just high at the time.:icon_chee
Anyway he was mostly spot on,especially with the common errors in throwing the kick in the start. Alot of people use ther arms to swing around rather than torque the hip to generate momentum.
No offense meant to Joe, because I like him as a commentator and person, and I am not familiar with his martial arts background, and have never studied TKD. But, I have been training "spinning back kicks" for over thirty years, and technically speaking, it is called a spinning "back" kick because, it is a back kick, and not a side kick. So, he has left out some crucial information.
The most important being that as you complete the spin, it is crucial that you look over your shoulder while you are chambering the kick (so you know where your opponent is) (heavy bags don't move laterally) and, if you throw it as a back kick and strike with the ball of the heel, and with the foot pointing in the eight o'clock position, it will slip through your opponents guard much easier.
Joe does look decent, and maybe they do it differently in TKD, but without looking prior to throwing it, there is a good possibility that a skilled opponent will be gone when it shows up.
Ah, its common these days for schools to mix up the names same thing with the TKD roundhouse and the TKD round kick.
I definitely have to agree with Joe on one thing, that he says quite frequently. It is a devastating technique that is very "under" used in MMA today. If you catch someone in the ribs or liver, it's a show stopper.
A more detailed video.

I imagine a lot of the anti-TMA/anti-TKD crowd hearing Joe give some respect to TKD techniques and think "but dude it ain't MT or BJJ...it must suck!". lol
Encourage them why don't you!:icon_lol:
I still use both the spinning side and spinning heel kick. Generally can land both. I mix it with the Muay Thai and it works for me.
Rogan...well...he's Rogan. I think he's better at talking.
Good video. If you freeze it at 2:21, you will see the head turn prior to shooting the kick that I mentioned and, if you freeze it at 3:54, you will see the eight o'clock foot position that I mentioned. Thanks for the video.
As long as it aint about the whole 'fake moon landing crap'.
I saw some of his stand-up on netflix...was pretty funny I thought.
