hey guys, just came back from Brazil, where I had a chance to troll around some of the jiu jitsu sights. Went to Natividade, Itaperuna, Guarapari and (of course) Rio. As you can imagine, it was all great! :)

the People on most academies were amazingly warm, I advise every single one of you guys to try it at least once before you hang up your gi. training in Rio is very good, and you get the chance to look in the first hand at the Meca of jiu jitsu were the game is evolving, but having a chance to travel within Brazil was just as good. after a session with these guys from outside Rio, they all wanted to give out t-shirts and stuff ! it was wicked being the local attraction :-D

anyone else did the same kind of thing here?

my wife managed to tape a couple of the rolling sessions. I am the guy with the white gi in both sessions..

I trained with Team Evolution in both Itaperuna and Natividade (diferent instructors but same academy), Aliance in Guarapari and Brasa in Rio (chico Mendes and Ricardinho Vieira) Both Videos are from Natividade's academy. In fact I met the guys on their main academy in Itaperuna and they invited me to go and train with them at one other black belt's house on sunday morning (he was the main instructor), his name was rafael (didn't tell me his last name), and the session at this guys house is where the recordings are from

    cheers!

The weird moment was when the teacher in one of those places told us to strip the top gi and made a vale-tudo session, kicks from the waist down and open hand slaps to the torso and head.. I felt like "oh, oh.." but it went quite well. I managed to survive :)

funny as well to see the way classes are handled diferently from teacher to teacher over there..

I heard similar stories from Brazil.
People would strip of the gi top and practice with open hands while rolling.

Did you see them training any females at any of their schools? Were the rules different for your wife as far as how their society is?

I'd love to go and train there. I'd consider it an honor and a highlight of my BJJ training, but I'm not sure how they'd treat me since I'm a girl.

My boyfriend and I have plans to go sometime next year, so I wouldn't be alone. He's a belt above me.

    Thanks for your insight.

Hi Paige, I didn't see any females in the places were I trained. On one ocasion there were a couple of girls watching, but not rolling. I also had a bit of a bad experience on one of the academies. My wife walked in to pick me up at the end of the training. My wife is a good looking women (former model) and I could see all the guys looking and acting a bit daft. At the end as I was leaving I heard behind me "is she with him? what a waste!"

I have to say the guys attitude was far from friendly, but still worth going there. Just try to ignore it, as the sparring is definetly worth it, and I am sure there are academies with women's classes, probably gracie barra as they are in a posher area.

nah, they weren't purples. they were both blue belts. But as far as I could see, the level of the purple belts in europe is the same as the brazilian ones.
