that's the thing: people that look like her can be from all sorts of places. i have a similar look, and get mistaken for being from all kinds of places.

The problem is that folks in the US have a problem getting it into their heads that "Latino" and "Hispanic" are not races. They're ethnicities, mainly cultural in nature and as such Hispanics and Latinos can be of any race. There are White Hispanics, Black Hispanics, Chinese Hispanics, Japanese Hispanics, Arab Hispanics, etc, etc.

She seems confused that her father can be Mexican yet not have any indigenous blood. I work with a guy who is Mexican. His parents are both first generation Mexican immigrants. He's like 6'5 and 280. People get confused by this and ask him why that is, and he tells them that his family is half German. The conversations normally go like this.

"You're German? But I thought you said you were Mexican?"

"I am"

"..... But your parents are from Mexico?"

"Yes they are, we moved here when I was like 18 months old"

"But.... how are you German?"

"My mother's family is almost entirely German"

".......But you're mom is from Mexico?"

"Yes"
