don't know where this goes but bjj made this worse, so maybe someone else has this:

when ever i open or close my mouth, and especially when i'm eating, my jaw pops really loud. if i put pressure on the side of my jaw, the popping will stop, but once i let go it comes back. should i be worried? it doesn't hurt, it's just loud and makes my girlfriend cringe when we eat together.

Sounds like TMJ to me and probably has nothing to do with grappling.

well, it definitely got worse after grappling - the popping became more chronic and louder after having to basically use the lower mandible to defend. if it is tmj, what can i do? should i see a doctor? what's the common treatment?

lol I have the same exact deal. I believe it is a TMJ problem. I had it checked out by a specialist. He suggested surgery, however it would not be covered by my insurance! So you can imagine how pricey that would be. When you in a rear naked choke and people are squeezing your jaw will it loudly pop? Mine does that people FREAK! They usually let go and assume they broke my jaw.

it really only pops when there is no pressure on it at all - once i push on my chin or the side of my jaw, it goes away.

If it is a TMJ problem it shouldn't pop if you jut your jaw forward and move it up/down

It definitely sounds like TMJ, and grappling definitely makes it worse.

doctor would be more help. it's a muscular issue; nothing to do with your teeth.

Fuck... Ive had this exact same issue for a while now.

I have to eat like a priss now, in fear of hurting my jaw.
