Jake Shields Respect

Shields is the 3rd best welterweight of all time

Shields is the last of your standard, reasonably athletic, hard worker who makes up for their lack of elite ability with grinding pressure. The last of these guys have recently checked out (Forrest & Bonnar), with a stragler or two who are still around but have yet to scan their exit passes (Sanchez & Fitch).

He just doesn't have, or has never had, that obvious athletic factor to really leave waves in the sport. His BJJ is top notch, but he's no Andre Galvao. His wrestling always seemed elite, but that's because he was usually out-wrestling guys like Daley or Lawler. He had great match-ups in his career. Hendo is probably his most prestigious win, but I'd almost write that off as a bad cut for Hendo as he has never been outworked like that until he stepped in with a much larger and decorated Cormier.

Still, Shields has achieved enough to warrant his spot as one of the top WWs and (not so much) MWs.

He is one of the best. May not have the most exciting style but he belongs in the UFC.

I wouldn't mind if he came back to the UFC someday, but I don't get particularly excited to watch him fight.

It's a shame what Palhares is going to do to that knee or ankle though...and you know he doesn't let go either.

While he isn't the most exciting fighter I do enjoy watching him make guys look silly on the ground. The fact that he is able to do beat the level of competition he has with his stand up is very impressive. I think he can beat Palhares. Either way its going to be an exciting match up that I am already really looking forward to.

That neck crank tonight was sick. Him and Aoki have a few of my favorite sub finishes with their neck cranks. Just pure fucking strength not being under the chin.

Do not count on it.
Shields is probably one of the most difficult fighters to submit.

I'll count on it...Palhares has a way of making the impossible possible when it comes to his ground game. Might not be able to do it as fast, but I still see him winning by submission.

His BJJ is top notch, but he's no Andre Galvao
jake is much better technically than those "grinders" you listed. His BJJ is elite, on a level similar to Galvao but not in the gi obviously.

also, Galvao got KO'd by Woodley, Jake didn't.

No shame in that...look at that mother fucker. He's a judo Olympian with dynamite in his hands. Nobody wants to fight Lombard.

I don't buy that at all. Woolley didn't want to fight him. Rory stepped up to the plate. Lawler would have fought him in a heartbeat if they weren't training partners. Nick would fight him and I'm pretty sure Johny would too. I couldn't see Condit turning the fight down.

Jake Shields was a bad cut.

I didn't mind guys like Fitch and Palhares being scuttled because it was easy for me to digest the reasons they were cast out to sea.

Shields is one of the great fighters of his generation, still relevant, and got fired after losing a decision to a legitimate contender. Lombard is an absolute nightmare matchup for Jake stylistically and nobody wants to fight him.

War Shields.

I'll count on it...Palhares has a way of making the impossible possible when it comes to his ground game. Might not be able to do it as fast, but I still see him winning by submission.

If Alan belcher can beat palhares, so can jake...

You don't buy that?

Honest question - we take a completely private poll of top 15 welterweights tomorrow - you don't think guys would mark down they would like to avoid Hector Lombard?

Stop.

Wins over:
Okami
Hendo
Nick Thomson
Paul Daley
Carlos Condit
Demian Maia
Tyron Woodley
Martin Kampmann
And the most importantly,
Robbie Fucking Lawler...

Holy fuck. I'm not even a fan, but this is just sad to see him fighting outside the UFC.

Robbie Lawler isn't the most important win. In context Hendo is.

Lawler wouldn't be a big deal on anybody's resume if he hadn't turned his career around.

If Alan belcher can beat palhares, so can jake...

That was (in my humble opinion) one of the marquee fights of Belcher's career. He came in well prepared, confident and stayed completely calm. It was a performance he can look back on for the rest of his life.

Recently Joe Rogan mentioned it on his podcast, perhaps back in December, regarding Belcher bringing in a leg lock specialist to put him through the paces in preparation. A few weeks of repetition and his confidence was high. There is exactly zero doubt in my mind - preparation is a huge factor in MMA.

War Belcher.

he got dropped by a jab from a guy fighting with one arm

If Alan belcher can beat palhares, so can jake...

I'm not one to play MMAth, especially off of one performance, I just feel Palhares will be too much if Jake tries to go to the ground. The window for which one can make a mistake on the ground against Palhares is very, very small.

Jake shields have friggin awesome resume. His style was and his price is the reason he's fighting outside UFC
