In the official UFC rankings for welterweight Shields is not in the top 10.
He has a loss to GSP(everyone has, at least he won 2 rounds) and a loss to Jake(he also had some serious personal issues before that fight) in the last 8 years.
Now he has a win over Kampmann, Lawler and an older one vs Condit and Okami in one night.
Also a win over Dan Henderson.
He is also the ~15 win streak SF champ.
Kampmann, Lawler and Condit are all ranked top 10.

I realize that he had some close fights that he barely won on the scorecards but they weren't clear robberies. And he also had some really boring fights lately, the match-ups against good TDD guys didn't help him either.

Bias towards more exciting fighters? (Lawler beats Kosh and he gets 8th place)

PS: the rankings seem to only consider the official result, Healy was one spot lower than Miller despite beating him because it was ruled NC after Healy was suspended for marijuana

With Okami being cut I'd worry if I were Shields if he loses.

    Those wins are old.

He hasnt done anything recently to earn a top ten spot.
I dont know why he's fighting Maia, he should be fighting someone outside the top ten.

Not very old, point is he only lost to GSP 48-47 and to Burger (after his father died that month or smth).

Lawler lost to Larkin who is unranked recently and yet he breaks top 10 just for beating Kosh(who is also unranked).

And yes like someone else said I also think he gets cut if Maia dominates him.

The thing is he had some boring fights against Tyron and Akiyama but they were bad matchups as they have good TDD.
It's not like Pierce who has a boring fight even when he KOs someone unranked.

If Shields loses to Maia expect him to get cut. He is one of the most boring fighters in the UFC. Boring fighters have to worry about facing the ax every fight.

Shields doesn't deserve top 10 status.

Lawler lost to Larkin at MW, not WW.
Kos was top ten when he finished him. Shields hasnt finished anyone in years

He has no impressive wins, let alone finishes, in the UFC over top competition, that's it.

Koscheck didnt stay in the top ten after back to back losses so why should Shields?

They are only bad matchups because Jake is an incomplete fighter. His wins are rarely decisive then he had the + drug test. To many media rankers you becime inelligable for a top spot if you get a drug suspension. Not to mention that he left the division and only rerecently returned to have a lack luster performance against a guy who is towards the bottom end of the top 20-25

There are no official UFC rankings, there is only an official UFC popularity contest, and almost nobody likes Shields except his teammates (maybe).

He was even on PEDs for one of his most boring fights.

But seriously, he's 3-2 (1) in the UFC; why would he be highly ranked? Because he was very successful in the B-leagues? Even his wins in the UFC (NC included) were mostly against mid-tier fighters.

He's a good control grappler. He needs to step up the rest of his game if he wants to be top 10 at this level.

Shields should be in the top 10. He was a round from beating GSP. If Shields beats Maia he should get a title eliminator.

No he shouldn't. And if he loses he should just be eliminated.

Shields has the same problem as guys like Fitch/Okami. When they win it's incredibly dull, when they lose it's by something awesome, and they're not actually well rounded or dominant enough to win the belt.
Under no circumstances should Shields be top 10 WW. Dude got ktfo by Berger, decisioned Sexiyama who got cut, then tested positive against Herman, and barely beat Woodley.

I actually like the dude, somehow inspiring to see dude do so well in fighting sport, while having some very apparent 'negative talent' in many aspects of fighting, lol.

That being said, he's probably ranked appropriately. Stiff test for most fighters, can soundly dominate/sub lesser competition, but not elite.

That's mre than a shame about Jake not being top ten, and I'd like to see Shields get more love in the rankings. Okami being cut now, though.......any top ten fighter needs to worry about their job it seems....

IMO, anyone who beats Kos is top 10.

I demand a source right now. The state he had a failed test in refused to reveal what he failed for. So you blurting out wrong information is just fighter bashing.
