I've never seen Maia sweep someone so easily

Yeah but he sweeped Ben much much easier..
I haven't rewatched the fight since but I don't remember Maia outclassing Gunnar like he outclassed Ben

The grappling exchanges with Askren were much more competitive than the Gunnar fight. Until the finish of course. Maia schooled Gunnar in that fight.

gunnar nelson is a world class jiu jitsu fighter and maia swept him several times. he also pulled guard off of a failed shot attempt vs masvidal, only to sweep him immediately after iirc.

i don't really have time to go through all of his fights to find more examples, but maia is a beast at sweeping / reversing positions.

and he's still doing it at 41. maia is king.

fake coder now acting like he knows any degree of grappling. Sad.

This. Its really no detriment to Ben that he got schooled. Gunnar f.e. is a fantastic BJJ fighter. I have seen some BJJ matches from him and he destroyed black belts left and right when he was brown. Really the absolute elite and Maia just toyed with him. He is in a league of his own.

I agree that for a complete ground fighting specialist like Ben I expected more especially with the age difference, but well Maia is Maia. Lets be happy we can still see him.

Yet he apologized in cage...who cares what his hindsight bullshit is...

He knew he blew the call and apologized

I think the apologizing in the cage was the bullshit...when the heat of the moment passes and you review your decision without Robbie Lawler screaming at you, the reality sets in...

Nelson/Maia was as comprehensive a grappling beatdown as you will see without a finish.

Lawler was never out...

Don't care what anyone says...u dont pop back up like that after going out..doesnt happen

Ironically last two days , I’ve been on YouTube rabbit hole with their shit . Saw some awesome seminar footage from Brazil . I’m a brown belt . I learned so much just by watching them cause they go over SO much detail in a very easy way . Their turtle control , to back take series was unbelievable . The de la riva counters were awesome . They are so good at explaining . They are Bjj scientists . I was thinking of subscribing to their site ..you’ve given me extra push Brutha , to do it. Thanks .
ha, they should give me some money for directing potential customers to them!

i haven't been a member of their site for a few years now, but back when i did subscribe it wasn't that expensive either, some 10-15 $ a month. no clue what they're charging now. i think a lot of people go into detail with their technique, but these atos guys both cover every conceivable detail, but also steer clear of technique you'd never use. it's very competition oriented, and they break everything down into a simple-to-follow plan. you go to DLR, opponent defends this way, you do A, opponent defends that way, you do B, opponent disengages, you do C. and it's all moves you can actually see them perform in competition, not some self defense convoluted horseshit.

the only critique i have is that rafa explains everything for 20 minutes. gui is quicker, and andre galvao is quicker still. i prefer galvao over everyone else, but mendes probably has the best technique of them all. he will break it down so that even a retard gets it, but that means you can't just quickly check out a few of his vids. he just goes on and on.

We need @KazDibiase in here with his superhero cape

Maia toys with everyone on the ground. He's the single greatest BJJ practitioner to see real success in the octagon. The people who beat maia do it by avoiding the ground entirely.

Jacare and Werdum disagrees ..

He destroyed Nelson. Made him look like a joke. He’s just that good. Agree that he swept Ben easier than expected though. I would’ve liked to see them grapple from the beginning of the fight, before they tired.

he swept gunnar several times, making it look easy as well.

and he completely outclassed him on the mat, the only difference being it was pretty much a 15 minute ground fight and gunnar didn't get finished... but maia spent most of his time in dominant position and swept him whenever nelson managed to get on top.
I remember he went from Fanny pack to backpack several times in that fight and bloodied Gunnar up in the process.

Maia is better. Werdum outgrappled old and ugly and got thrown by jacare in a grappling match. Jacare while very skilled has failed to have the same type of coverage that maia has shown.

Maia needs to just work on his imanari roll and leg lock entry from the single, to get high level anti grappling wrestlers to the mat because the pure single and the overhook have failed completely against those types of fighters.
