It's amazing to think how far mass views on martial arts has changed since the 80's

For the last 15 years I’ve been making fun a karate and it’s uselessness. I started doubting myself after watching karate combat... now I’m really starting to doubt myself after taking my MMA kid to a karate tournament and seeing him lose.... the fights I saw at this tournament were incredible. Nothing like karate used to be. I think it has come full circle. I now have much respect for karate. When compared to some butt scoot tournaments we go to bjj May be the new point sparring of combat sports.

My son losing to a karate kid:

Not all karate styles were McDojo'd. There were always hardcore styles, but they weren't as popular as the others.

Bruce Lee and ninjas are still real to me dammit!

Which is why I always have to laugh when people think that MMA fighters are these invincible fighting gods on the street.

Groin shots, biting, eye-gouging, fish-hooking, guns, and knives > MMA

Of course weapons changes everything but I’ll take the mma fighter over the street fighter almost 100% of the time.

So pathetic.

To respond to OP, what do you mean Frank Dux didn't have a 75 mph kick in the kumite finals????
frank dux kicks as hard as a ford escort and I resent you making fun of that

Also, Master Ken is (still) awesome:

, and should get more credit:

Imagine going back in time on some forum in the 80s on martial arts, trying to explain how daniel cormier's fighting technique is one of the best. Imagine how many times you would be inundated with claims that "I would just bite him if he tried to rear naked choke me". Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try. Or dealing with a 200 lb 5'7 guy who wants to argue that his chi would obliterate anyone.

Has it gotten better? We still have Sherdorks that think they can beat half the roster of professional fighters.

Maybe it's gotten a little bit less ridiculous. Things like Krav Maga and Systema are still very popular and people still think it turns them into Jason Bourne though.

MMA is also niche. More than anything, the rise of exercising in America and the rise of martial arts as a form of doing so has changed that image more than MMA.

Biting would be a legitimate strategy in a real fight.

At the same time, it is a signal for escalation, meaning things get personal and nasty, eye gouges and groin shots are now fair game. You abase your honor and fight like an animal, so the opposition now has no qualms dealing with you in a dirty way. Note that these happens subconsciously.

The thing about Bruce Lee though, is he was a very practical, highly intense guy...try actually reading some of the stuff he wrote and his interviews...he trained all the martial arts...boxing, kickboxing and judo/grappling...but remember, his goal was real fighting, not fighting in a cage, with tons of rules...

And? Has he tested his shit? Against who? Where and when? How many times? And what was the level of his opposition?

Sparring and fighting with your dojomates is very much different than clashing with a stranger for benefits (aka combat sports/ prizefighting). You wouldn't know if the opponent will go to great lengths harming you just to gain the benefits.

In my experience honor only comes into play on the playground. Real street fights as an adult are someone crazy attacking you or someone and their friends ganging up on you outside a bar.

I think you missed the point entirely. This isn't about UFC rules and there was no UFC in the 80s, just a lot of misconceptions about martial arts, as TS mentioned.

Andy Hug bless!!!

Karate sucks!!

GSP Kyokushin bless!!!

Karate sucks!!

Dellagrotte karate baby!!!

Karate sucks!!!

Machida era motherfuckah!!

ETC., Etc., etc....

Every art gets lumped into the shit pile at some point or another, multiple times. The misconceptions are still there; old traded for new, which were old once before and will be new yet again.

Ahhhh we have a bruce lee hater among us...haha....listen to what many have said about him...listen to what jim kelley said about him...how he was a freak of nature and nobody could touch him...but I'm not going to debate how great he was...cause the haters can never be made to see...

Except not once has anyone won a fight using chi or invisible powers or mind control or kung fu

Those misconceptions are not really still around. Karate by itself is just asking to be taken down, so you have to learn grappling, movement, etc. as well. No one thinks having a single skill will be enough to win a fight anymore. Just because people still have some dumb opinions (i.e. those who thought CM Punk would win) doesn't mean we have the same misconceptions people did before MMA

There’s nothing to see. There was never a single piece of footage of him in a legitimate competition. Not even real sparring.

Martial arts used to be akin to magic.

Right on, except they can implement these as well + whoop ass professionally using the remainder of the techniques :), while an average dude won't throw a punch properly.

lmfao

You dont have to.

if its fast enough and has enough power, it doesnt matter.

Checking my thread history, clearly it isn't possible. Feel free to bump all of them I've made in the last year to prove your point.

Get back at me, and stop hijacking the TS.
Shamrock by heelhook.

people underestimate the hell out of KyoKushin. GSP attributes it to why he learned distance management so well for his wrestling.

Obviously, no one is invincible, but if it's a "real" fight, all those things would be in play for the MMA fighter as well as his opponent.

It's not like the MMAist has to fight by unified rules while his opponent has free reign.

Every single dirty technique is easier to execute when you are have a positional advantage.
