they were scheduled for a rematch. Story goes that Santos missed weight (again) and was given a certain amount of time to lose the weight. Apparrently during the time santos was supposed to be trying to make weight (sauna, etc) he was caught in the buffet stuffing his face with food.

anyway, when santos missed weight (he was 172), askren still agreed to fight him. the only stipulation was that santos could not weigh more than 190 pounds when they had another weigh in the morning before the fight.

santos refused this stipulation and that is why the fight didn't happen

I would LOVE to see my favorite WW in the UFC. I agree with your assessment of how a grappling exchange between Ben and Khabib goes. I am not saying the either Khabib huge LW or Ben is a tiny WW, but truth be told, Ben IS the slightly bigger man.

I know how much everyone loves to laugh and poo-poo a solid 5 pound weight difference (Cyborg/ Rousey) but for two elite grapplers like Khabib and Ben, it is pretty significant. Ben cannot make 155, and IMO Khabib will give away at least 5 pounds (possibly more) if they met at 170.

Only problem is, Ben Askren never won gold a worlds in wrestling. He never even competed at the worlds in wrestling and when he did make the Olympic team it was at 74 kilos, not 84. Ben Askren won a world title in grappling under the FILA banner, a completely different sport than freestyle/Greco roman wrestling and not even in the same universe as far as competition level and prestige. Not that Ben wasn't a world level wrestler, he absolutely was, but he never proved he was gold medal at worlds type good.

Its actually a very interesting style match up, even in terms of (MMA) wrestling. Khabib has been training with some of the absolute best wrestlers in the world (Sazhid Sazhidov, Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov, Magomed Ibragimov, etc) for a very long time. And his sambo titles round out his wrestling skills nicely in an MMA context. Ben is an amazing wrestler. He was great at freestyle and even better at American folkstyle. Id love to see them fight, grapple, wrestle, etc.
