This is absolutely in China's interests. Iran getting toppled will majorly fuck up China's energy supply, especially if the US is involved and they install another puppet regime in Tehran. China can't afford that so they will be helping out Iran to ensure their own future.

Risking a full blown war jeopardises that even more though. I can t imagine China deciding to hit a nato ally instead of waiting in silence and observing.

Besides China relies a ton more on coal, natural gas from Russia and central Asia as well as atomic power than crude oil? I would say?
