Isn't Michael McDonald very similar as Barao and Jose Aldo?

I just saw the betting odds and realised that Faber is the favorite against Michael McDonald, and I was a little bit surprised. No disrespect to Faber but I think McDonald is very similar as the 2 guys who basically won every round against Faber: Aldo and Barao.
McDonald was almost ahead on points when Barao stopped him, at least that is how I saw the fight back then - a close fight but McDonald more than holding his own.
McDonald has fast feet, quick hands, excellent striking, he is also a few inches taller than Faber - so in short: McDonald is the type of fighter that troubles Faber in every aspect of the game.

I think the fight will be close but if anybody is a favorite, at least in my head it is McDonald.

PS: I did not see every fight of McDonald (but I saw all his recent ones), I saw a lot more fights of Faber but overall I see McDonald as I described him in this thread.

They have similar styles yes. And the only reason he's the favorite is because he is ranked higher.

McDonald should be the favorite

This bout is a toss up, hard to predict either way. I can't wait to watch!

As far as the Barao/McDonald bout went. I thought McDonald probably took the first round, mostly for getting the knockdown during that flurry against the cage. I gave round two to Barao (close), round three Barao big and round four was all Barao up to the submission.

I guess you could say he's similar. What I always thought urijah loses to people with a better level of athleticism, discounting brown. Look at dom, aldo, and barao. They are all just in insane shape, fast as all hell, and on top of that insanely skilled. Micheal knocks people out and is insanely fast, but I don't know if he is on urijahs level when it comes to speed. We'll find out. I think I actually am going to go with the upset, because michaels power is just a game changer. But this will be a tough fight, plus for Michael it's in urijah a backyard.

Mcdonald was not almost up on points against Barao

McDonald isn't as well-rounded as Aldo or Barao, relying more on his boxing. That's not much of a knock on him because he's young and still developing his game, and because you don't really get much more well-rounded than Aldo or Barao. Those two have almost no holes in their game at all.

I think McDonald beats Faber this weekend.

His TDD and ground game isn't where Aldo or Barao's is. He still has a very good chance against Faber, but he hasn't shown to be at their level yet. Also, McDonald won one round against Barao, at most.

McDonald is not a heavy kicker, and his takedown defense is nowhere near Aldo.
He's very different from Barao, while Barao striking is good at distance (he has a great jab, and a big arsenal of kicks that he's very good at timing and throwing with no set up), he's not very technical in the pocket (where he's still angerous via power, chin and speed); Michael on the other hand relies on his great punch variety, likes to counter and is very good at close range.
So yeah, no.

TDD + BJJ + kicks*.

no
McDonald has good TDD, not quite barao level but close. McDonald has better bjj than a guy like aldo. Only real factor is his boxing is better than barao but he doesn't use kicks

Good post but McDonald isn't as well rounded as Barao and Aldo imo.

I don't know, I learned to never bet against Faber in non title fights but at the same time I believe McDonald has what it takes to beat him, and that includes insane power.

Like you said, he was giving Barao a competitve fight, he even rocked Barao in the 1st round IIRC. I'm picking Faber to win but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he beats Faber, and if he does that, I believe it will be via [T]KO.

Cheers.

Mac's bjj is nowhere near Aldo's. The only thing Mac has over them is hand power and thats it.

Used kicks in his fight with Miguel Torres multiple times, Put Brad Pickett on his ass with a kick to the face. Since when does Michael Mcdonald not use kicks ?

Pretty sure in MMA it's better. Never seen aldo in anything but guard or on his back with 0 sub/sweep attempts and only standups

Barao and Aldo have some of the best TDD in MMA, McDonald has poor TDD and Faber knows a thing or two about taking people down. Faber wins via UD.
