Do you agree?

Volk fans will say "Get rid of 5 minute rounds, Volk would win."
But then Islam would just backpack Volk for a longer time and no progress would be made.

What's the right way to judge MMA fights in 2023?

The fight had a rule set and scoring criteria agreed upon beforehand.

Islam wins by that criteria.

You can discuss hypothetically if it was scored by PrideFC scoring or the weird ass Rings criteria if that would have possibly yielded a different outcome but it was quite clear under unified rules.

Yeah. The part you're talking about lasted a minute. How does that give him the win?

Don't get me wrong, I believe Islam was the better fighter overall in the fight.
I'm trying to see it from the Aussies POV (the last 1 minute showed Volk's dominance was greater than Islam's dominance at any single point in the fight)

If it was like t wood vs wonderboy 1 then I could see it. Woodley beat the fuck out of wonderboy in rounds one and four and he did it from start to finish. Wonderboy out pointed him in the other three.
Volk had only had one minute, and likely because Islam was dumb enough to coast.

That's what's wrong with five 5 minute rounds. Should it be whoever wins 3 rounds first or who inflicted the most damage/threat?
Even GSP said he dislikes 5 minute rounds. It should go on longer because in a real fight there is no "reset" back to feet.

Yeah, Islam was definitely gassed in the 5th. He also said after the fight that during the last round, he though he won 4 rounds already. So maybe he got lazy in the 5th

That's way too long of a discussion, bro. Even a damage based system will have problems. Imagine if a fighter gets out pointed and out wrestled and scores a knockdown and horrifically beats up the other guy for half a minute. Should the damage completely negate the striking display?
He clearly wanted to coast. This was his first five round fight. Volk is a killer and capitalized on it.

Round 5 was the most dominant round
1 round huh? the rest of the rounds Islam was countering Volk easily. So much him for being faster.
Volk fans probably also wish that he was a foot taller but you cant keep making ' what if' excuses for quite an obvious loss.
Lets face it , its not because Volk lost , it because of who he lost to.

hate to break it to you dude, but this isnt a 'real fight' , it is a sport...there are rules...
more ' what ifs'

This is one of the times where round by round scoring sucks. Under pride rules, Volk gets his hand raised. Either way, there no way Islam leaves that fight after being on his back in the 5th and looking like he had nothing left in him and feels ok about the outcome. If I won a decision like that I’d take it, but I’d want to run it back immediately because there’s no way I’d feel good about that win.
