Islam is great and everything, possibly a top 10 all time great already, but I think he’ll have his hands full at WW. Honestly I think it’s the best WW generation ever tha he’s facing and I can’t imagine Islam holding the title against all these monsters just hitting their primes:

JDM- 28 y.o., 5’11, 73” reach, 18-2
Probably the best boxer we’ve ever had at WW. Amazing TDD and he’s very powerful as well. Also still very much improving

IMG_2895.jpeg

Shavkat- 30 y.o., 6’1, 77” reach, 19-0
Huge WW with an incredible finishing rate of 95%. High pressure and can finish the fight both on feet and on the ground. Undefeated

IMG_2896.jpeg

Brady- 32 y.o., 5’10, 72,5” reach, 18-1
Built like a tank, excellent wrestler. Unlike most historic great WW wrestlers, he actually goes for submissions and he’s really good at it

IMG_2897.jpeg

Garry- 27 y.o., 6’3, 74,5” reach, 16–1
Very long for a WW and uses that length very well. Very high fight IQ, neutralises his opponents strengths. Outstrikes the grapplers and outgrapples the strikers

IMG_2899.jpeg

Buckley- 31 y.o., 5’10, 76” reach, 21-6
Extremely athletic fighter. Powerful, fast on the feet, with creative striking, great kicks, strong wrestler as well

IMG_2898.jpeg

Morales- 25 y.o., 6’0, 79” reach, 18-0
Enormous for a WW and unbelievably powerful. 72% TKO/KO rate. Amazing TDD. At just 25, still just hitting his prime. Also undefeated

IMG_2900.jpeg
Prates- 31 y.o., 6’1, 78” reach, 21-7
Another huge WW. One of the best Muay Thai specialists we’ve ever seen at UFC. Sniper with a 76% TKO/KO rate. Great TDD as well

Honestly I can see anyone of these killers beating Islam and they would’ve been champions or title contenders in any of the previous generations. All of them just hitting their prime, I think the next 3-5 years will be very exciting at WW.

Islam has good wrestling and he has a very good darce. I think he has issues with people he can't steamroll. He is getting older and the skill gap isn't that wide. He can definitely win a few but some might give him a lot of trouble.

Sometimes size can be all the difference in a fight. Guys like ian garry, shavkat and Jack are all pretty big and might give him trouble

Then there's the take down ability and pressure. While Islams sub game is top notch, it's safe to say his takedowns is nothing like Khabib. I'd be more confident if Khabib was the one moving up

Islam's trips and throws are better than Khabib's. From the clinch he's not just good, he's otherworldly with the ways he gets guys to the mat. He absolutely doesn't have Khabib's ability to chain wrestle. That relentless style of Khabib's wasn't just effective, it broke dudes. Whereas Islam is more dynamic with his grappling. There are more differences in the grappling styles of Islam and Khabib than some realize.

Could be that fighting bigger dudes makes Islam's grappling look far less impressive. We'll see. I think he'll still find success.

He’s not holding that belt at all. Jack is an awful matchup for him and easily the best fighter he’s ever fought.
Yeah I feel you. JDM, Buckley or Morales got the power to knock him out. I actually think Islam beats Ian. Point fighter who weighs in around 180. Islam can beat him on the ground..

Shavkat, if he recovers, is the worst matchup for Islam. Way heavier, longer and decent grappler

Ians long, not big. He's the lightest of all those guys. And for that reason I like Islam. The one guy he fight with a weight advantage, get him on the ground and keep him there..

Dunno about the rest, but he'll probably walk through JDM, then probably fight Shavkat then retire. He'll be 34 this fall, and I don't see him being one of the guys who hangs around into his late 30s getting KO'd over and over. It's likely win the belt, defend it and retire on a high note.

Moving up is usually much easier than moving down, so there's a good chance Islam looks better at 170 not having to be on such a restricted diet during camp or having a hard weight cut. JDM has had 4 consecutive very close fights all againt guys who aren't as good as Islam, and his TDD is only in the 60s%, so Islam is rightly around a -200 favorite for that.

Shavkat is probably the toughest matchup of the bunch, but his wrestling isn't that great, so hard to see how he'd win a decision if he can't get a finish.

Brady would either be a really fun grappling match, or he gets stuffed and pieced up on the feet.

I guess the question is, if he loses to Jack, does he even fight anyone else at WW? I think there’s a good chance he gets brutally finished by Jack and either retires or goes backs down to fight Ilia.

He's basically a dagestani Brady.

Im sure at 170 he will be as thick solid and tight as Brady with slightly better grappling and slightly lesser striking

No doubt he faces a different breed of fighter at WW but for what it’s worth in a recent training video he looked like a different breed of Makhachav

Will it be enough idk but he’s noticeably bigger & looking pretty f’n beastly training for 170

He will be the dagestani Amirkhani, great wrestling and one outstanding signature sub, if he doesn’t get it in the first round, he will gas badly and get finished.

He's still better than most of, if not all of, these bums.

WW is shark tank for sure, that makes it even more interesting adding Islam to this list.
he will have a hard time there.
out of these killers, imo Morales will be the champ at WW very soon

He is absolutely not a Dagestani Brady. Comes in about 20 pounds lighter.. Brady has elite upper body strength bro just hits that one arm side guillotine.. . Specialist fighter whereas Islam does everything extremely high level..

"slightly lesser striking"? That's Bradys weak point. This take is all over the place man

All of the best fighters at 170 are outside of the UFC at the moment.

Jack Della Magdalena and Belal Muhammad aren't among the 5 best welterweights in the world.

Shavkat Rakhmonov is to closer to Ian Garry than he is to the Top 5.

The following welterweights are all better than anything the UFC has to offer:

Ramazam Kuramagomedov
Shamil Musaev
Jason Jackson
Yaroslav Amosov
Magomed Umalatov
