Was just reading this article Islam Makhachev responds to Dana White, thinks Conor McGregor retires after loss to Michael Chandler - MMA Fighting and found this part interesting

“It’s a good fight for MMA fans, but if Chandler wins, [McGregor] is going to retire for sure,” Makhachev said. “Make some good money and that’s it. But Chandler, so smart guy, because I saw his last couple fights, he fights like crazy, like he comes from the street.

“But now I understand why he did this, because if he beat [Dustin] Poirier and [Justin] Gaethje, this fight never happens. But the last four fights, they have same streak, they lose three times, that’s why this fight is happening."

I know Islam's English isn't great but that really sounds like he is saying Chandler intentionally didn't want to win those fights as a plan to set himself up to fight Conor.

What y'all think?

It actually makes sense. When Chandler fights, he really starts doing crowd pleasing moments despite his pacing or his safety. Too many times he was swinging for too long, blocking punches with his head, doing high energy takedown slams instead of being professional. Kudos to him it actually paid off as he is getting big matchups out of it.

Chandler is going out there swinging for the fences without much of an articulate gameplan. I wouldn't say he's intentionally trying to lose but winning doesn't seem to his first priority as much as entertaining.

I feel like this is much closer to the truth of it; I don’t believe for a second he’s been losing on purpose.

Anyway, hope he recovers back to good speech. Wish him well:-)

It doesn't sound like he lost fights intentionally to me at all. He's just saying they wouldn't have give McGregor a fight on TUF with someone with a more impressive trajectory in the division. I.e. Chandler was picked because he is a credible and legitimate, but potentially he is stylistically very friendly showcase for McGregor's return given his losses and his wild fighting style. I don't think there is anything about fight fixing to set up a TUF spot even vaguely implied

He’s just joking, giving a backhanded compliment to Chandler by saying that he’s smart, but also that Chandler and Connor are both losers, and belong together.

Let's not make more out of this than it is.

DC was trying hard to get something out of Islam and Islam didn't care. At some point, he realized that he needed to say something for the interview though and made a joke.

Lol, wtf is this post? Take your meds, bro.

He definitely lost fights on purpose. Chandler could beat cans like gaethje and Dustin anyway.

im sure there are many fixed fights. money always wins. destroying a good bellator fighter is another good reason.
and the last thing is ppl dont want to hear the truth and just tell them what they want to hear.
1 good example.. politics

If you watch the video, you will notice that he is obviously joking. The interview was with DC. They always fuck around when talking to eachother.

Around 12:45

Thanks! That is interesting, it clearly sounds much different there. Very clear he is joking, taking a shot at both guys. It sounds completely different in the video they are quoting of Islam in front of the media where he is nowhere near as comfortable as he is talking to his friend DC.

I am guessing the DC interview came first and he was repeating what he said to DC but without the obviously joking context and tone.

Lol Islam is insane. The idea a fighter would intentionally lose multiple times in hard fights to get a shot at Conor which is no guarantee.
