There are weak hadiths indicating female circumcision, presumably of type 1. Removing the clitoral hood is not a big deal, though somehow I doubt that is what these people are going to be doing.

I suspect it was more to do with the fact that their lives, on a day to day basis, were made worse by the coalition invasion, the dodgy Malaki regime and frequent terrorist attacks. They were open to anything at that point. I think they value stability over intangible ideas of freedom. Not sure how they feel now mind.

FGM is not related to Islam.
It is based on African tradition. Even the countries in Africa that has the majority as christians, do FGM.
