I always thought both guys were similar in a lot of superficial ways

Max, like Tony, is a Just Bleed God who would rather block punches with his face and rely on his durability rather than fine-tune his striking defence.

both guys are/were able to absorb absurd levels of damage but as you get older it's dangerous to rely on your toughness & granite chin

Is Tony a glimpse into Max's future if he keeps going down the path he is now?

Everyone's chin will crack if they fight long enough, damage incurred in a single bout or not. Max's chin will too. He's not immune to it. No one is. Good thing his chin has been great enough for him to entertain the hell out of us though and I'll enjoy all his fights until he hangs them up, win or lose, as everyone should do with fighters they support.

Yes, fighting powerful strikers at a high level and age is not good for your health, specially on how both of them seem to rely on durability and reflexes, Tony is 1 fight away from retirement if not this is it, Max still has time, but who knows if he is already too old to improve on his defensive game and change his style.

Poor Tony is a shell of himself

feel bad for him

1. wrecked by Justin

2. absolutely obliterated by Chandlers foot

Tony's case is worse. He not only got concussed, he got severely concussed. He was out for what, 5 minutes? That's insane. When that happens, it's time - especially if you are Tony's age and have taken the damage Tony has taken - to get out. Anyone who doesn't suggest this to Tony is no friend of his.

Max has never even been KO'd, but if he gets severely concussed in the UFC time he has left I hope he has enough brain cells left to retire.

I think Max will struggle to absorb shots in his future as well as he does now. He may not get laid out like that anytime soon, but eventually he'll got wobbled and hurt by the same power that he used to absorb.

But lets be real, everyone would be. Max is not immune to brain damage in any other way. He's got that thick polynesian skull that carried him pretty far, but everyones chin will crack eventually. Max has been testing his pretty hard for a long time now. Sucks cause I love the guy, my heart won't survive seeing him KO'd stiff.

Yeah, its over. We all love watching Tony fight but a KO like that is a sign that its over. At best Tony fights pillow-fisted cans just so he can fight a bit more, but any legit contender worth his contract will beat Tony. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt cause he looked good on the feet in that first round, but yet again struggled with a good wrestler like he always did. People act like Oliveira was the guy to show us that yet Tony has been taken down and held down way more times before that.

After Charles I said, have Tony move up to WW. He won't be champ but might get somethign out of not cutting a shit ton of weight and can put together a streak, cause it was clear his run at LW is over. Beneil sealed the deal (that rhymed). But even that WW dream is over now. With his chin completely gone, he'll struggle to absorb WW power even without the weightcut. Chiesa made the move at the right time, James Vick made it far too late. I think Tony is in that Vick territory now. That train has left the station.

While I do think Tony’s chin is shot from too much damage, the kick that knocked him out would have slept the most iron off chins.

That kick would’ve knocked out anyone though. Who knows maybe prime tony would’ve ate it. If you notice all great chins are eventually cracked by kicks not punches. Look at Hendo, DC etc.

I don’t think it’s shot. Punches wouldn’t have put him out.

It's a glimpse into anyone's future if they're still fighting top 10 guys at 38.

(A few exceptions ofc)

yeah look at some downfalls. frankies always come to mind because that guy went from insane durable and quick to taking some of the hardest flush shots he took in his entire career fight after fight

It's the future for a lot of guys that take a lot of punches. Holloway, Oliveira, Ortega, Jiri, Munhoz, Burgos. It's already happened to guys like Hooker, KZ, Cerrone, and Reyes.

Well, to be more fair. Tony looked better than he has in a long time. He just got caught by a brutal kick. Anyone who gets caught with that kick is going out bad.

Most likely, yes. However, there are exceptions. Carlos Condit and Chris Lytle have arguably taken more damage than Tony has over a longer career and they never cracked after 50+ fights.

That's just it, he shouldn't have been caught with it. With his experiences, its time to call it a career if he's that easy to catch now.
