Is Volk vs Islam actually for Pound 4 Pound number 1?

I don't really think it is.

Islam would have to go up and fight the 170 lbs champ to claim that title imo, this is his first title defenses and he hasn't fought many in the top 5, whereas Alex has beaten all the GOAT contenders of his weight class.

Imo P4P number 1 needs multiple title defenses or several top 5 wins, and/or success in the weight class above.
What if Islam gets dusted by the 170 lb champ? Then who's P4P number 1?
The guys above are supossed to be able to beat the guys below, that's the entire point of weight divisions.

If Islam wins I think the standings should really remain the same. What do you guys think?

Obviously, Volk has a better claim to it, but if Islam wins, it'll still make a good case considering that there are so many new champs in the men's divisions.

It'll also depend on how the fight goes. If it's a close, controversial decision then I could see it staying the same. If Islam just goes out there and runs through Volk, then that's an even stronger case for him.

GOAT contenders?

Decisions over punch drunk Max Holloway are great, but Ortega and Zombie are hardly impressive title defenses.

If Volk wins he’s the rightful P4P #1, if he loses I think he drops behind Usman. The strength of schedule at FW is not as strong as LW or WW imo.

In the future we can have AI generated bots of fighters in robot bodies matching all the weight classes to settle this for real

I’d say so yeah. Let’s see how it goes.

you don't need to go up to be p4p 1.

its more about your streak and how dominant you've been during the streak. once you take an L its very difficult to build yourself back up.

islam will probably be #1 if he wins. But i also think that if either jones or cejudo win their matches they go above him due to double champ status.

I understand your logic.
Rankings themselves are pretty arbitrary. P4P rankings are totally wack.
I'm choosing to focus on the fact that we're getting two guys on 10+ win streaks facing each other.

Well Volk deserves p4p1 based on his long streak, title defenses, and previous dominant victories.

I'd say Islam is the best candidate for p4p2. He has a huge dominant win streak, and he beat the LW champ relatively dominantly and without too much difficulty.

I think all other champs had shorter streaks or more difficult title wins.

Additionally, many people do feel that Islam is the uncrowned P4P 1 fighter.

He beat Max and Aldo, the 2 goat contenders of the weight class.

Ortega and Zombie are both good - great wins, especially considering where they were at the time of fighting Volk.
He also beat Mendes & Elkins. Featherweight is drastically more stacked than WW, pretty ludicrous claim imo. 2 of Usman title defenses were against bloated LW Jorge Masvidal ffs.
FW is at worst the 3rd most stacked division ATM, next to BW and LW.
