In her fight against Jennifer Maia DC made a comment that Valentina's takedowns aren't really correct from a technical standpoint but she's so strong and explosive the other women can't do anything about it. It made me realize that all of Valentina's takedowns are her getting underhooks and just muscling girls down or getting a headlock and throwing the girl over. I think this could be a problem for her against Andrade because Andrade is physically strong as well and these types of takedowns may not work.

It is certainly the closest thing she has to a discernible weakness. I think Tatiana Suarez is the biggest threat to her at 125 if she ever made the jump up -- or a similarly talented wrestler/grappler. Given the current crop of challengers it is hard to imagine Valentina not overcoming any such deficiencies with pure strength. Andrade will be a very interesting test this weekend.

Uhh... this is quite possibly the most fundamental way to execute a takedown.

It's not "muscling" someone. If you have double underhooks, create an angle, and block your opponent's leg it's just an extremely effective way to get someone down.

Da Un Jung hit William Knight with this type of takedown 4 times a couple of weeks ago.

Her takedowns and trips looks pretty slick. She also gets down there with black belts in bjj. I’d say she’s pretty damn technical.

DC is wrong here. He’s thinking wrestling but Valentina is using Muay Thai trip to takedown opponents. To DC they may look wrong cause she is using a different discipline to get takedowns. Watch any of her Muay Thai fights she applies the same techniques

Val does a lot of sweeps from the clinch, timing and leverage rather than strength ..... Muay Thai.

Val has good takedown technique with her trips, one of the best TD techniques in her division... above average for all divisions IMO...

They are just not typical wrestling takedowns. DC is looking at things from a wrestling perspective. There are a lot of different ways to do takedowns from martial arts that will differ from wrestling techniques. That's why Dagestani style wrestling gives american wrestling problems, it's from their sambo base that throws them off. They use different takedowns than what american wrestling is used to.

lol what does this even mean? She's taking girls down with very low risk takedowns with not a lot of resistance. How is that not being technical.

Take a breath friend. She has a functional wrestling game, its not bad at all. It just isn't super technical. It's simple low risk takedowns like you said, which is fine.

For me being technical is about having layers and complexity in your game, that's all.
