I'm convinced that he is.

Common BJJ stereotypes are...

-Weak, scrawny physiques
-Pull guard / butt scoot
-Poor takedown skills / No takedown skills
-Non-aggressive
-Heavy reliance on gi
-Point scorers / Non-submitters

...to name a few.

I think what makes Toquinho very good, and what makes the sport of BJJ look very good because of him, is because he's precisely the opposite of all those things in every way.

Just some thoughts.

Tanquinho? He stalls just as much as everyone else, if not more. I think he is boring as shit to watch.

Toquinho= Paul Harris
Tanquinho= Augusto Mendes

Don't worry, He Man is a new troll in F12:

I think Professor Schaub versus Ryron would be a good match. I don't think he'd get submitted.

Rener smashes your soft onioned head.

bjjaz, the thing about Rener smashing HHJ's head was an inside joke. I recognized him from years ago and thought he'd remember that reference. :redface:

And what's the deal with "Professor Schaub" ?

Most of the best BJJ guys don't meet those stereotypes. Andre Galvao, Buchecha, Rodolfo, all physical, aggressive beasts with great TDs.

Though I'm not sure how reliance on the gi in a primarily gi sport is a bad thing. That would be like saying it's a stereotype that Judo guys rely on the gi. Well no shit. And hockey players rely on ice, sticks, and skates.

Haha, yeah, weak, scrawny physiques? Have you watched the Mundials in the past 10 years? Looks like a bodybuilding competition.

I think we pretty much agree. I don't think it's any coincidence that the few guys who don't fit the stereotypes are also the guys who do very well.

Ronda Rousey would now like to have a word with you. She pulls off a lot of Judo stuff in every MMA fight, no gi included.

I'd guess the stereotype is from the most famous BJJ practitioner - Royce Gracie. He was never anything but scrawny in his golden years.

I see where that comes from, but for every Royce Gracie there were 10 Ricardo Arona types.

Probably because of how cheap the 'bomba' is down there.

Ronda's so far above her competition in skill level that I think it's a bad comparison. Not that I think Judo type throws can't work in MMA, just like I think history has shown that being really good in the gi translates to being at least pretty good without it. Besides, what works in MMA and what works in grappling are two different things. It's a lot easier to finish an armbar if the person is wearing gloves and you can punch them in the face. Besides, weren't you ripping on gi training? You should probably try harder to keep your trolling straight.
