Reem, Hunt and Werdum were all still top 5 and top 10 only two years ago. in 2016 Werdum was champ, Reem fought for the title, Hunt outstruck Lewis.

You have Stipe, Bayldes, old man DC, Francis and Greg hardy today.

Previous era fighters like JDS and Cain didn’t hold up well against the test of time losing in their peaks to a one dimensional Francis, Stipe, deflated Reem etc.

The golden era of UFC HWs Mir, Timmy and AA got laid to waste by the pride imports.

The handy, Ricco, etc era was too short lived.

So in your opinion are we in the true golden era of UFC HW competition ? Or will this lot be written off in a couple of years too?

It’s incredibly weak. The weakest ever. Cain and jds are nearing their end. You have stipe and ngannou.

I'm not really sure they had a golden age per se.

At least post-Pride, it seems like it has been roughly the same year over year. Three or four guys who could reasonably hold titles. Another handful that were "good" fighters filling out the top 10. And another handful of guys beneath them to fill out cards.

I'm old enough to remember when the Cain/JDS era was going to rule forever. What a dud that was. The actual run up to them owning the division was longer than their ruling time was (especially JDS...he had a ton of good wins pre-shot).

It's insane how JDS had to win 6 additional fights after knocking out the UFC's number one contender before he could get a title shot. That would never happen today.

Out of the fighters listed, it's important to note JDS and Stipe are 1-1.

Cain's entire career is an asterisk.

I understand what's being said, though it's not much.

Hard to say whether it's the best or not.

A lot of the top 10 have been around for ages, though it has been sprinkled with some newer names.

The older fighters getting supplanted is probably due to fighters getting older, rather than just being out skilled, though you can see it either way, I suppose.

It's far from the worst(mid and late 2000s was abysmal) but the UFC HW division was better before Bellator became serious. In 2012,2013 the HW division was the most stacked it had ever been. And it's not like the divisions really evolved, DC's 40, Stipe's 38, Overeem's a LHW washout from the mid 2000s, Ngannou's really all they got whose new.

The 2013 top 10 HW rankings were Cain, JDS, Werdum, DC, Bigfoot, Overeem, Mir, Nogueira, Barnett, and Stipe
The current 2019 top 10 HW rankings are Stipe, DC, Ngannou, JDS, Blaydes, Lewis, Volkov, Overeem, Cain, and Abdurakhimov

If the 2013 HW division had Fedor instead of Bigfoot you would literally have a list of the top 10 most accomplished HWs in the history of MMA.
The 2019 list has 5 all time greats at the end of their rope in comparison.
