1. 35+ rookie

2. Champ after 4-5 performances

3. Quit the sport with the big purse

5. A % of the (noobish) fans would put him among the top of the rankings

A boxing champ. James Toney was paid 500 grand for his one fight against Randy, and we knew he wasn't going to blow the doors off. Someone like Amir Khan could, even though he's coming off that loss to Canelo.

MMA is Z-tier athletes with ?-tier brains.

Khan has a glass chin.

Several athletes in other sports have walked into the NFL with no college football experience, often they are basketball washouts without the slightest chance of making an NBA roster.

Deontay Wilder is sort of like that with boxing, started really late. Brock at least had an extensive foundation in wrestling when he started MMA, but Brock was like 29 and Wilder maybe 20.

If you have a strong grappling pedigree then you're not really an MMA rookie.

That skill alone puts you light years ahead of the competition; especially in combination with freakish genes, a good work ethic and supplements.

Baseball. Pick up a bat and swing.

I don't know as I don't follow anything but combat sports.

That said, MMA is unique in that it's a mix. Brock is special in that he's abnormally huge and athletic and was already very good wrestling, allowing him to take the fight where he wants it. Additionally, the HW division was not to the level it is today when he became champion, and I doubt we'll ever see something like that again in MMA.

Many other sports are one dimensional with very specific rule sets, so you can't really have a 1:1 comparison. For example, being great at baseball doesn't help with basketball, because these sports don't interconnect the way the different aspects of MMA do, i.e., shooting hoops isn't an aspect of baseball.

Difference is team sports vs 1 on 1 because in teams sports you can have multiple guys give attention to one guy.

So for instance there's no one guy who can guard Calvin Johnson, but you can put 2-3 guys on him.

You can't consider team sports. 1 man can't carry 4 to 10 teammates not doing worth a shit. Except in basketball, which no one watches.

i agree plus who can't throw a ball i've been playing with balls since i was a baby.

MMA is a fucking joke, don't compare it to legit sports that take skill.
