I think marcelo just refers to it as the backstep pass vs butterfly but any info on it? Would be nice to have some direction instead of me randomly trying it in class lol. Ive slowed it down and kinda figured out what hes doing, reminds of some capoiera movement.

It's also called the Capoeira pass.

This. You'll find the most info on it by looking up "long step" or and watching some stuff from people like Cobrinha, Bruno Frazatto, Gui & Rafa Mendes, Terere, Andre Galvao...

That's all I play in no-gi. But it doesn't always look like butterfly guard because so few people will kneel down and try to pass that way anymore. Any time I have my hooks inside your legs whether you're standing or not, and I'm trying to hook flip you or go to X, I think of myself being in butterfly guard. Also arm drags. Lots of arm drags. I basically base my entire no-gi game on Marcelo circa 2007.
