Is the payoff worth risk?

Tony hasn't sparred in years though.

Sparring is as close as you can get to an actual fight. I don't think fighters should have hard sparring all the time though. Maybe one or 2 hard sparring sessions. The rest light.

Well, the sparring for Khabib will be much different than the sparring for a guy like Gaethje. The guys Tony is sparring will be emulating Khabib, i.e. a very grappling heavy style, focusing on takedowns and ground control, with the occassional jab and maybe even an overhand thrown in. Not necessarily CTE-inducing. Now if you're gonna spar for someone like Gaethje you need a brawler to emulate his style which would be much more damaging to your brain/chin.

It’s a very broad question, depends on a number of factors
But you definitely should not be pushing yourself to the point of injury with the fight of your life on the horizon.

He’s probably pushing his grappling training to some ungodly level to prepare for the top heavy bulldozer heading his way

I have learned to just trust in Tony at this point. This man knows how to prepare himself for fight.

I think for every fighter it's different. You have to find a balance between being prepared and injuring yourself.
If you dont simulate fighting it's very hard to be prepared for a fight though so some sparring is ideal.
I'd say as long as his sparring partners are professional and not trying to break his jaw he should be fine but we are also talking about a guy that got taken out by a backstage wire.

Hard sparring is probably the least dangerous training exercise Tony does to be honest.

Fighters like Cody Garbrandt have had their chins fall off a cliff due to excessive sparring/bro downs/

Was it the sparring or a fight with a juiced opponent?
They can use protective gear in sparring, can't they?

You gotta spar a little bit at least. I get the pressure not to, but you're going to have a hard time understanding what it's really like without it.

fair opinion. It’s the opposite of any great trainer and the overwhelming majority of quality fighters.
maybe a lot of guys in mma are taking your advice that’s why you have a lot of fights
Looking like a sparring session.
with a fighter clearly down on the cards at puts no effort into trying to finish the fight.
All too content to take the loss.

to believe tony isn’t sparring is pretty damn funny.
