I always find thread about people talking about staph infections and what not. I was always a little freaked out about the possibility. I just wanted to know if there is a general consensus that staph is more rampant in the United States than in Brazil per say (where I live).

I've just never encountered a case and I take all the precautions (wash gi almost after every session, good hygiene but not overly excessive due to good skin bacteria etc) but I'm asking more out of curiosity.

I've trained BJJ in the U.S. for more than 7 years at 3 different gyms. I don't know of anyone getting a staph infection. Just maybe 2 or 3 cases of ringworm.

I almost always have some tattoo piece or the other in progress, so I'll often end up having to roll the same day or day after I've had work done. I take every precaution I can. Never had trouble. Our mats are kept very clean though; some other gyms I have trained at out of town occasionally I would never step on with broken skin...
