Fedor destroyed Minotauro in his prime. Minotauro was considered the top BJJ specialist at that time.

Khabib vs RDA. He controlled Dos Anjos very well the match is a good example of Sambo vs BJJ since it was about 85% just grappling.

Hector Lombard vs Jake Shields and Palhares. He beat the hell out these two who are considered one of the best BJJ specialist (top 5). He destroyed Palhares and he showed great grappling skills against Shields.
Note: Cuban Judo foundation is Russian Judo which is more similar to Sambo than traditional Japanese Judo.

Sergei vs Werdum... Sergei was able to defend himself pretty well on the ground against a top 3 BJJ specialist.

Kim vs Nate. Kim did an excellent job using a great top control against Nate's slick BJJ.

Karo Parisyan. I know he is a Judo guy but his Judo is Armenian/Russian style which is more similar to Sambo than traditional Judo. He almost submitted Diaz and showed excellent top control.

This thread couldn't have been started by someone with a more appropriate AV. lol

Almost had me til you mentioned Karo...sorry, argument ruined in my opinion.

Isn't sambo a mix of bjj, wrestling and striking? Sure sounds like a better "base" for mixed martial arts than just bjj.

BJJ is also a mix of judo, catch wrestling, and sambo (Thank you, Rolls Gracie).

swear to god it was a nobiasjustmma thread

Id say so yea.

You left out Werdum subbed Fedor which is a good argument.

If judo were easy it would be called sambo.

Fedor's power and explosiveness had more to do with his success vs Nogueira on the ground than his technique did.

It's the athlete not the sport. Hell Roy Nelson has a background in Kung-fu and he knocked out Crocop and Nog

Circular arguments and discussion... yet an important one.... imo it all comes down to the fighters paths and theyre ability to adapt to diferent styles.

No chokes allowed in sport Sambo though and Fedor was primary a judoka before combat sambo and MMA.

Sambo, judo, catch-wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are four different approaches to the same martial art.

And it's hard to beat BJJ because those :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:s just take everything from every other grappling school and call it jiu-jitsu.

Gracies are some of the most shameless truth-benders and marketing turds in the history of martial rats.

Many new schools in sambo incorporate a lot of BJJ techniques but traditional Sambo is a fusion of wrestling (both Western and Eurasian indigenous forms), Judo, and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.

Well seeing how Combat Sambo looks like MMA with a Gi but with more restarts, yes. The rules lend itself to it.
Also Sambo is not based on BJJ it is Judo Ne Waza. Helio was still a incompetant Judoka when Sambo was created from wrestling and Judo.

Combat Sambo yeah because there's strikes involved. It's about as close as you're going to get and you can train under the juice masters in Soviet Russia.
