Tough one. Start to finish ANH is solid, but RotJ has higher highs and unfortunately lower lows.

Vader vs Luke in the throne room cutting to battles on land and in space is epic.

Also random something I noticed the last time I watched RoTJ...:

I get the feeling Leia was "assaulted" by Jaba and his crew...he was obviously a deviant and loved his slave girls...and after she gets captured Leia is in a metal bikini and chained to the slug...

And the scene where she is taken over to Jaba and they cut away to Crumb laughing....

In fairness, I don't think they planned on Boba Fett becoming some super cool darling of the fans years later, and was probably written as some 3rd tier underling to be dispatched of.

It's not like they had no clue how popular Boba Fett was going to be. His debut was in the Holiday Special, and then Empire, and RoTJ was filmed two years later.

I don't know if pointing to the abomination that Lucas tried to bury, points to them thinking Boba Fett was gonna be a big deal.

Anyways, I think it's a modern complaint after the fact. I don't think anyone at the time was going "How could they do my boy like that?". Just another bad guy getting got. I think he's a bit overrated to be honest. He's practically a prop. He just looks cool.

I think overall it has a higher number of exciting sequences, and the final showdown between Luke and Vader when Luke loses ot and goes ape-shit before throwing away his saber might be my favorite part of any SW movie ever. Its really gonna come down to whether you prefer the excitement of the climax or mystery and build up of the introduction. I'd probably lean towards yes, but its anslight edge. There's no wrong answer.

I always thought a new hope was boring.

It gets a ton of credit because it was the first one and it introduced all this cool shit.

But the pacing is super slow and they missed some big opportunities.

For instance, seeing Kenobi die just didn't feel that impactful because Luke only knew him for a couple days. They could've easily made Kenobi someone that Luke hung around all his life. Like Marty McFly's relationship to doc Brown.

We all know Empire Strikes Back is the Masterpiece of all the Star Wars films.

But what do you think of Return of the Jedi is it up there, even better than the A New Hope?

I just recently watched this with my nephew and we both agreed ROTJ is better A New Hope.

Not by much, but nevertheless it is the superior movie.

The battle sequences, especially the space one is just incredible.

The sequences with the emperor is riveting.

The only thing that was off about ROTJ is Ewoks, but I get them. They are like vietnamese soldiers who find a way to win a war they probably shouldn't have one.

Oh yeah the fight sequence with Luke at Tatooine was badass, he took on everyone.

But anyways I'd give it a 9/10. Just short of a masterpiece.

I always thought it was over hated because of the Ewoks, it's not like the other Star Wars movies don't have silly little aliens. ROTJ is the second best mivie in my opinion under Empire.

I jumped off the fence. ANH was awesome for starting Star Wars, but RotJ is the second best behind Empire

A New Hope if definitely better, and much more consistent. Jedi has a great opening and closing, but the middle part really drags. The ewoks are a bit silly, but really the whole Endor segment is just plain boring outside of the speeder chase. Han Solo does absolutely nothing in the movie, doesn't even fly the Falcon in the last battle. What was the point of saving him at all? And another Death Star? Really? Lucas ran out of ideas by the third one?

Jedi also got some of the worst 'special edition upgrades' in the trilogy. The cgi song and dance number in Jabba's palace is pain inducing and embarrassing to watch. Adding Vader saying 'NOOOOOOOOOO!' right before he saves Luke from the emperor is fucking criminal and completely ruins the scene. The last thing the movie needed was a call back (errr call forward?) to the most unintentionally hilarious moment in Revenge of the Sith. The changes and additions that Lucas made to original trilogy are completely baffling and made all the worse due to his efforts to erase the original versions from existence.

And...
*They killed Boba Fett's appeal by having him scream like a bitch, while getting accidently killed by a half-blind Han.
*C3P0 is, by far, even more annoying in this one than the other two in the OT.
*Piss-poor plan by Luke to get Han&Leia out from Jabba's clutches. In fact it was practically luck... and getting Han back took 1/3rd of the movie although he was practically irrelevant to the rest, which was...
*A 2nd Death Star? Seriously? "Oh just build another one?"

RoTJ has the best few moments of the trilogy with Luke, Vader, and Palpatine scenes... and ALL of the trilogy worst moments.

Where the fuck did they get the crystals to build a bigger one???

I come from the era when Star Wars was the name of the movie, not a franchise. We never called it "A New Hope."

The shock value of DV's family revelation in V has catapulted it into the lead for most popular SW installment. VI's best element is also the best element shared by the prequels - Ian McDiarmid's flawless portrayal of Sheev Palpatine.

All that said, IV is the franchise's best film and is my personal favorite film ever.

Haha. When did George and co. add that “Nooo!” In ROTJ. When I recently rewatched it, I was doubting my senses as to whether or not that had been there all along. Completely threw me off. But I don’t remember that being part of the Special Edition back in ‘97.

i saw all 3 original movies in the theater and nothing will beat that moment when vader looks at luke and picks up the emperor and drops him down that shaft .. people went NUTS!!! Also in Empire when he said he was his father

Jedi was better from a film quality and effect perspective etc.. The entire beginning with Jabbas palace the rancor and the sarlac pit etc to the space battles etc looks amazing (by the years standards) yeah the ewoks were cheesy but i also saw it when i was 10 so i didnt mind at the time

RotJ was the worst SE, took away from how cool the original was...

That was when the Blu-ray editions were released. They made some other changes too as shown in this hilarious video
