Is punching a good Idea?

If you watch some of the old Gracie videos, the bjj guys are REALLY punching. That is weird. Why would they risk breaking a hand when they are in a dominant position and they are going to finish with a choke anyway?

If I were in a fight where I know I can out grapple the other guy I would never punch. (except for distraction maybe)

Punches set up submission plus it is fun to punch people during a fight. :)

It makes submissions easier, and I think it keeps a an opponent "honest". By honest, I mean, if you are mounted on him for instance, and he realizes you aren't going to hit him, well...he's likely to be much bolder and to be using his hands for things other than covering his face. You don't have to be trying to pound him out, but it's a good idea to give him something to think about.

Trust your grappling, but be practical. Don't get tied down in one idealogy or way of thinking about fighting.

My thoughts exactly. I'd only strike to set-up a throw (f.ex. hard push to the throat > Osoto Gari). Other than that I have no need of them against someone who doesn't know how to grapple. I especially wouldn't be throwing head strike - the human skull is a lot harder than the small bones in my hands.

Punching is NOT that dangerous.

Can you fuck up your hand? Sure, but not as badly (or as surely) ad the guy you're fighting will fuck up your face if he gets the chance. The rewards for punching (ESPECIALLY from a dominant position) are great, and the risk is very small.

The "dangers" of punching are drastically overstated by grapplers, just like standup guys do when they talk about all the glass and needles on the ground. In reality, grappling and striking complement each other wonderfully.

Punching people in the face is immensely satisfying

yes it is. so is soccer kicking some POS in the face.

I only ever broke my hand one time and that was because as i was punching someone they turned their head around and i hit them in the back of the head. Like, when you ring someone's doorbell and you are going to beat the crap out of them, at least when they answer the door they could look at you.

As they say, punch a black belt once and he's a brown belt. Punch him again and now he's a purple belt. Punch him hard enough and he's unconscious.

I'd go with open palm strikes. Especially when you're mounted on someone. If your fist hits concrete, good luck.

Use the heel of the hand, the blade of the wrist, and elbows. More than anything you're far less likely to break your hands.

Hit someone who you are mounted on and see how quickly they give you their back. Especially an untrained person.

If you are top I don't see how you are going to hurt your hand unless you are idiot and punch the ground

Why not beat the crap out of him? Punch right and you won't break your hand unless it's a freak accident.
