Is Max Holloway right now better than B.J. Penn in his prime?

Holloway has fought tough opponents, but to me, to confirm that, Holloway would either have to beat Aldo or Edgar to prove that.

It's looking like they're about even. B.J. had the skill set, never got into submission trouble, he just had gassed out in fights and fought guys that were naturally bigger and stronger than him.

However, B.J. didn't commit in one weight class for very long. He would look into other weight classes to look for bigger opportunities - Chase for the gold.

    What do you think?

Fuck no. BJ penn is a hall of famer. Holloway aint even won a real belt yet. It could happen but jeez give it time. GSP surpassed Hughes by actually breaking his records. Dont you think this is a bit premature?

That means absolutley nothing, you can say that about almost any division. There is like 2 or 3 fighters who managed to have pulled that off in the history of MMA and hollaway aint one of em.

Prime BJ was also brought a lot of techniques that are emulated by many different fighters.

Most likely in another 10-12 years the current crop of fighters will be outmatched by the next generation.

Max is for real though, in time I can see him being one of the greats. But right now? No.

BJ would have a tough time with Max's movement and boxing IMO.

Would be a fun fight. BJ had very good boxing, but imo he isn't winning the stand-up against Max, who's bigger & taller than him despite fighting at a lower weight, and is deadly from mid-range. Max has filled out his frame and is now strong enough to clinch & grapple with Lamas, but he'd be out-skilled on the ground vs BJ.

So to answer - If Penn took him down like he did with Fitch, he'd need to finish to win. If it stays on the feet or Max escapes to his feet Max wins on points. Very hard to finish BJ in a stand-up fight.

    Hell no. Very few are.

BJ gave GSP all he could handle in their first fight.

    Destroyed Gomi and prime Hughes.

    These guys are legends.

    Won multiple titles.

How is this even a question.

I'm a Holloway fan, but cmon.

Pettis didnt even make weight, clearly something was wrong.
Because of that his win over Pettis is not impressive.

And the 70's Steelers wouldn't win one superbowl if competing in today's NFL.

So are they not one of the greatest teams?

Penn could match him on the feet and was far better on the ground, and at wrestling.
