I found this picture of him on facebook with Dennis Kang as a white belt.
I dont feel bad about being a white belt after seeing this..
What are your opinions on this? Is he sandbagging or actually a white belt???

so what if he is..?

his grappling/mma training would help him get promoted though.

we had a korean visitor(purple) who competed against KZ in nogi years ago. guy lost. KZ is a beast. Still, pros shouldn't compete at whitebelt division.

The way KZ recovered guard and triangled poirier shows he is a very advanced bjj player.

He's probably way higher than a white belt in terms of actual skills, I just doubt he spends very much time training in a gi at all.

It's not a reflection of skill, it's either a sign of humility when entering a BJJ academy (he may not have a formal rank and assumes the lowest one out of respect), or it's a photo he took for kicks (playing on the fact that his skill level is obviously much higher but that he doesn't have a formal rank).

The takeaway point either way is that he doesn't have a formal rank, but his technical level is definitely above white belt level.

Yes Sir, a lot of guys are like this...namely Jones.

Being a great grappler doesn't make you a ranked BJJ player.

If a Sambo black belt beats a BJJ black belt it doesn't mean he should also be a BJJ black belt. Each art has their own techniques and intricacies that someone would need to learn and practice first.

So Koren Zombie may have some good grappling, but he may not know everything he needs to in regards to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the gi to get ranked, even though he can smash a lot of BJJ guys who do know those things.

Oh, and Jon Jones.

I actually trained with zombie when he was still with key. Those guys don't have a gi class nor did they ever train in a gi.

The head coach was a wrestler, and zombie told me his major in uni was mma. So he's a great grappler, just not ranked.

So as far as bjj goes he's a white belt in the regard that he's doesn't train with a gi.
