Conor is the topic of the last 4 articles in a row on my mmafighting app and is the topic of 8 threads on my Sherdog app first page.
Is the UFC capable of promoting more than 1-2 fighters to the level of Conor and Ronda and do you believe it would benefit them, as a whole, to promote a broader range of fighters?
I can't see the NFL, NBA, NHL, or MLB promoting one team to the extreme we see in the UFC given the fans wide range of favorite teams. Then again, I don't know we can compare these leagues to the UFC (team vs individual).
    Thoughts?

Conor invited the media to his gym for a scrum/workout all by himself. The UFC didn't promote shit.

He is the best self-promoter in MMA at the moment.

Love or hate the guy, he gets everyone WATCHING him.

Conor is very smart but if Nate beats him again there will be a party here at Sherdog.

Dana has a major crush on Conor. Probably blows him on his off time

Conor's self promotion is what gets him in that position. The UFC assists but Conor has done the majority of this with his own persona.

Im sure the UFC has thought of promoting other fighters but its an investment and if they promote nobodys with 0 personality it will likely just be money down the drain. They usually try and promote their own name brand more than anything else. Conor and ronda are safe bets, not sure why they were so high on sage and page tho.

Popularity breeds popularity. mmafighting keep jerking off Conor because they get more views than writing about other fighters.

Reality is, Conor is very bad for the sport. One man can't carry the sport and the hyperbole himself and media breeds is detrimental for everyone else. It does not bring more eyes, show me the proof in PPV sales and views across the board. You can't. Because only his cards are affected, and if anything the rest are affected negatively.
Conor is bad for the sport period, Nate will fix things for the real fans tho

NFL (Not For Long) really only promotes a few players. They stay away from spreading themselves too thin, knowing most players don't last very long and if they promote them it only increases the likelihood of them finding more trouble to get into.

    It's good.

MMA is different than team sports in many ways; but in this context the fact that teams and their promotions are regionally based is important to note. Teams are gonna be promoted by regions/cities, etc. whereas fighters will be promoted by event.

Fight promotions are about timing (a week before the fight, for example) and team sports promotions are about place (New York, L.A., etc.)

That said, if you don't think that major market team sports get an extra promotional push (NY Yankees, L.A. Lakers, Dallas Cowboys, etc) you just aren't paying attention.

I know right. Golf really suffered during that whole Tiger Woods period too. If only Dana had your business sense they coulda sold that baby for 6, 7 billion, easy!

Tiger Woods didn't detract from all the other golfers, he was just popular. You failed at life, never reply again.

I think you're right. It's not like Conor brings more eyes to the sport, giving more exposure to all fighters, thus giving them more opportunities to makes more money.

Nobody cared about anybody else perhaps Phil when Tiger was on his tear - but it brought more eyeballs and money to the sport which was good for everyone. I got news for you, underwhelming guys in terms of drawing power like DJ, RDA, Eddie, Jose - none of them get any more interesting and sell any more tickets if a guy like Conor ceases to exist.

Correct they don't. They also don't sell any more while a guy like Conor exists. But he does make it less likely for them to sell, since all he can do is talk them down. Conor = Trump

It's beyond terrible bad to put so much stock and importance on one fighter

That much coverage on one fucking guy?

So if something happens there isn't a even a close second to promote?

How do they think they're making money, have they not learnt from all the other major stars that fell off?
