I want to compete soon and I was wondering if I was
To take the stripes off my belt so my oponent won't be
Able to read me(know my experience) or maybe catch him of guard. Is this
    cheating?

Just line your gi with tin foil so your opponent can't read your soul.

edit; sorry, I miss-read the question. Many schools don't use stripes, if you take them off your belt your opponent will probably assume your school is like that. Most people won't notice how many stripes you have even if you wear them, I certainly couldn't tell you how many stries any of my opponents had, or if they where wearing them.

No, but it makes no difference.

    Just train.

Maybe you should worry more about beating your opponents with technique and not mind tricks.

And no offence but you sound like a newbie, is beating other newbies that important to you?

    Without any malice:
    STFU and compete...and train

Anyone with any sense will try to smash you just as hard whether you've got no stripes or 4.

All of you are in danger. Fail to recognize and give the proper respect to the magic tape at your peril!!!

Why would you want them to think you are worse than you are? Wouldnt it be better to have them thinking you are better than what you are?

duh, guys, the obvious issue here is that the tape is what sticks the training mojo onto the belt.

If you felt the need to ask the question, then you already know the answer.

The correct answer is to award yourself with way too many stripes to be realistic.

For example if you have a white belt with this many stripes, are you a black belt? Do you not train at all and not realize how stripes work? Complete mind fuck, works every time.

If I were your instructor and saw you taking off the stripes, I'd demote you to that level.

It's not cheating it's just pointless. In my experience people who worry about things like this are looking for shortcuts to win, typically because they haven't trained enough. It will make absolutely no difference in how your matches go, stripes are extremely subjective and many place don't even take them very seriously.

Questions you should be asking yourself before competing:

    1. Is my cardio in good shape?
    2. Do I have a plan for how I want to start the match that I've practiced a lot?
    3. In every major position, do I have a go-to strategy that I have worked on implementing?

If you can answer 'yes' to those three questions, then you don't need to worry about stupid shit like taking stripes off your belt.

Not if your goal is to have a ready made excuse for losing easily available!

Why anyone would care enough to seek such a useless advantage in a jiu jitsu match is beyond me.

You don't get anything for winning, and if you win knowing you were playing tricks, it won't feel as good anyway.

It's not like the other guys going to hurt you, just win normally or lose like an adult.

I thought the bacteria buildup in an unwashed belt is where the mojo was? This thread should be less about getting tape off one's own belt, and more about crafty strategies to get purell onto your opponent's.

I prefer colonizing my own belt with the deadliest bacteria possible.

I've checked the IBJJF rulebook. I did a Ctrl + F and didn't find anything in there prohibiting biological warfare.

Champions are just ordinary people who are willing to go to extraordinary lengths to win.
