Is instagram just about showing off?

All my friends have been telling me I need to join instagram. I caved and finally did but every time I look at what people are posting, it seems like it is just about trying to show how cool you are and make people envy you with all the cool places you go. Is this just a site for narcissists or is there real value to spending time on instagram?

A friend of mine is basically broke and lives off of his GF but if you looked at his instagram you would think he is a big baller who bangs NYC 10s every day.
I have an account and make it a point to not post pics when I go on vacation and shit like that.
Yeah - I think it's for showing off and it's annoying.

It also seems like the least engaged social media platform there is. People just hit like because they are hoping you check out their photos and follow them. No one seems even interested in anyone else on instagram.

Youtube must be the most engaged social media site. People actually invest time on that site.

It's probably the best social media platform out there if you just wanna look at babes and dank memes.

Eh. I know a girl who has thousands of followers and receives thousands of likes for her filtered photos even though she's like a 5/10 in real life. Plus she's poor and is dumb as fuck. So yes, girls use it for attention and guys use it to creep.

Haha...Not surprising.
I see just as many guys showing off though.

What shows up on my feed is basically my friends, a bunch of fine ass biddies, food, and cool tattoowork.

I know a few guys that are addicted to looking at girls on it. Both of their relationships are deteriorating quickly and I'm not sure if it's because they spend all of their time looking at girls who are better than their wives/gfs (at least in the pics) or they do that because they were unhappy in their relationships in the first place?

I am pretty sure that spending large amounts of time looking at random hot girls can't be good for your relationship though.

Nobody cares what a man does on Instagram. Instagram is for hot, young women to attention whore.

Oh, and pet pictures.

it's for looking at pictures. pictures that people post. on instagram. glad I could help.

All of social media is. It gives you a platform to show off shit to your "friends".

Its a vehicle for pictures. People posts their plates of food, gym pics, and emo-quotes or blowhard-motivational quotes . Social Media is kinda like porn in the sense its bad for your psyche.

I think youtube is full of fakes prentending to be something they are not, but it is the most meaningful.

Something odd on Instagram are all of these people posting these idiotic quotes with their photos. Things along the lines of "no matter where things take you, always keep your head up and your eyes on the prize." Literally makes me a little sick. Just self glorifying bullshit from a bunch of posers.

Personally, I use it only to post my photography and I only follow other really talented photographers.

The entire YouTube fitness community heavily relies on Instagram. Alot of them do online coaching, and its pretty lucrative, but thats for a another topic entirely.

Its mostly the hashtags that's facepalm worthy, not the pics

This.
So many post quotes/text like: "On the grind".
lol, okay bud, you don't work, just exercise/workout, eat food, take pics, answer emails, and video edit. Ain't really a "grind", most of us working a 9-5 do all that.
