I thought hurricanes were named after women?

They are no longer allowed to be gender specific.

Hurricane Bob, Andrew, Ian and a few more.

You would have to be about 50 or older to remember the time when storms were only named after women. I'm almost too old to recall when the first discussions about it took place in the late 1960s with the Women's Liberation Movement but it remains in my memory because those liberated women didn't wear bras.

According to NOAA;
"The practice of naming hurricanes solely after women came to an end in 1978 when men's and women's names were included in the Eastern North Pacific storm lists. In 1979, male and female names were included in lists for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico."
