one of my cars has automatic lights, and it's buried in the menu somewhere, there's no physical light switch, it just knows, and it's right all the time. One less thing to fiddle with, all cars should be that way, it's rather low tech.

My car has automatic headlights, so sometimes in the past when borrowing or renting an older car without them I'd forget I had to manually turn them on (especially on well lit roads) but that's about it...

The articles I've read suggest it's because the dash lights up now even if your headlights are off, so people just don't realize they don't have their lights on. I find that hard to believe.

If it's a well lit area like a city, I don't find it hard to believe, because people did this shit way before auto headlights were a thing. Outside of a well lit area, then it's mostly drunks or dumbasses doing stuff like this.
