If Cormier beats Gustafsson it will likely be DC’s last fight at LHW before vacating the strap. Given the landscape of the current LHW division it is very likely Gustafsson would win the vacant LHW title anyways, only after being slightly diminished coming off a loss to DC.

If Gustafsson wins that would obviously diminish the HW title and possibly hurt the DC vs Lesnar money fight’s hype.

Would both divisions be better off with DC simply vacating the LHW title and Gustafsson maintaining some legitimacy, given his previous close fights with Jones and DC?

PS - Obviously Volkan has a real shot at pulling off the upset at 227, but Gus is favoured for a reason.

Even if Gus wins, he won't be getting the fight before DC faces Lesnar.

Why? Because he only fights once a year.

DC winning is good
He vacates the title and then the real 205 kingpin returns

DC losing isn't bad either and doesn't affect the Brawk fight, DC is a insignificant part of that equation.

I think a more likely scenario is DC vacates and Gus/Volkan end up fighting for the title. I don't think DC ever fights LHW again. Even a Jones rematch would be at HW I'd assume.

Yup, Gus just doesn’t have enough star power (in b4 gtfo with wwe shit).

DC should secure that big money Lesnar fight first, then think about another LHW fight.

I don't know about that. Without his special vitamins Jones might be a MW.

That’s why dc wants shogun

He wants to do LHW in the meantime but Gus can beat him and spoil the hype for the lesnar fight since that fight will happen after Im assuming. Shogun is a easy win. Not much preparing to do in camp aside from just staying in shape and not getting hurt

Pull Smith, put in Romero, he beats Rua, schedule DC vs Romero and and then after that Lesnar vs dc

Gus needs to bide his time until DC retires then claim the title aslong as Jones is still jonesing

DC wants to defend LHW strap next then retire after defending HW strap against Brock.

If Shogun beats Anthony Smith I think they'll make the fight with DC before Gus gets a look in. Quite a big 'if' though because I think Smith is going to be a beast at LHW.

On Luke's mma hour he said he wants to fight again this year if it's a title shot. Which a fight with DC would be

The first fight was the best LHW fight I think I've ever seen.

The second should be every bit as good as the first if not better.

With DC retiring, it could only be a win win for the UFC.....

I really have to admit. I'm not too cool with DC going out of his way to duck Gus....It's just not right and will reflect on his career if he doesn't settle this before he retires.

The first fight was so close I still don't know who won. It has to be settled.

Lately DC's been talking a lot about legacy. If that is what he truly cares about, then he should be talking about fights at LHW with Gus and not Shogun. Even Romero makes more sense than a fight with Shogun. DC's talking a lot about himself being the GOAT, but he's lobbying for a fight with a decade past his prime Shogun. That's even worse than him bragging about his win over another way past his prime fighter in Anderson Silva.

Normally I'd assume the UFC would want the retiring champion to lose so they could pass the torch to his successor but it's probably not as big of a deal at LHW, considering Jon Jones is the elephant in the room.
