He came up just short at the 2004 olympics
At the 2008 olympics he was a favorite, then collapsed
In his UFC debut, he looked severely hampered by the jitters
And now he "didn't fight to his potential" (L. Rockhold quote) in the fight of his life.

Some athletes are known to be mental midgets. A couple of tennis players come to mind. Can a sports psychologist take Cormier to the next level? I feel Jones won the mental battle more than anything.

Maybe other guys are just better. Not every guy can be the champ.

I would hardly call the man a mental midget but it did seem like he was underperforming to me

One fight guys. One fight against one of the top fighters in the world in what was a great fight. He faded in the last two rounds. It happens. Calm the f#ck down.

Nah...if he was the classic choker, he'd have found a way to not smash Barnett or Hendo. Those were big fights with a lot on the line.

yes. If you make it to the Olympics but don't get a medal you're a choker. Being only in the top 5 in the world of something makes you a serious choke artist. Also fighting for a world title but coming up second to the top fighter in the world makes you the biggest choke artist of all time....
someone give this man the Heimlich he's choking so bad...

accomplish something in life, like moving out of your parents basement before you shit on other peoples.

He's not a choke artist. Jon Jones is just that good.

Yup he choked. Worst part is he talked so much trash and then ended up crying like a girl afterwards.

he's not a mental midget, or he wouldn't have won the SF HW GP or made the olympic team in the first place. but at this level, the mental aspect is definitely important and it appears jones had the edge.

He does not choke. Jon was better that night. The two people he lost to in the Olympics were better that day as well. 4th in the Olympics is really good anyways. Especially 4th in wrestling at the Olympics as a North American. We tend to not be the best wrestlers in the world (not as big a sport in North America as Europe)

I have actually crapped out better stuff than this scribble you call a thread.
You call an olympic finalist, a top 5 lhw and sf tourney winner a choker.

Didn't know Cormier fought in PRIDE.

You can be a choker and still win stuff you know?

Elena Dementieva is considered a huge mental midget in the tennis community and she still won an olympic gold medal. Generally, it means you just underperform on big occasions. And don't take it from me. His own training partner said he underperformed.

No choking had exactly nothing to do with it. I think the combination of weight cutting and Cormier not being as prepared for a 5 rounder played a key role though.

Again, who, looking at this rationally, thought "Ok, we gotta find a LHW to pound the shit out of Jones and bring down this reign that's driving us crazy, any ideas ... anyone ... oooh, umm, uh, WAIT, I GOT IT, we got this 36 year old guy whose body is probably shot from having an amateur wrestling career through to the Olympics on top of his MMA career and who has a fraction of Jones' agility and largely relies on his power on the inside and who looks like the Lollypop guild leader next to the guy and has the worst reach disadvantage of any of Jones' opponents. And who would have to exhaust himself cutting down to LHW to take this fight. And who has only fought one 5 round fight before against someone who could not defend his TDs. Yeah man, I KNOW this is gonna work. He ragdolled some large guys at HW, right? Right? So what can go wrong?"
