Is BJJ/grappling for me?

Hi, first off let me apologize for the TTT, I couldn't think of anything better to title it though...I ask if BJJ is for me because I have some back problems (3 bulged discs, 1 herniated disc) and I pulled my hamstring in one legs some years back (still bothers me and I have very little flexiblity) I take about 3 or 4 percocet (legally of course) when I am working (I am a roughneck, tripping pipe for the conditioning win) and maybe 2 if I am not and it starts to bother me...I asked my doctor but he didn't have any idea what I was asking about lol...I said kinda like that ufc stuff, he's a really big christian and said that fighting is bad unless it is for god lol, I wanted to show him gorgoroth on my Ipod after that, but then thought he would discontinue my painkiller ****** for that nonsense lol ) thanks for the advice in advance everyone
 
i can see being stacked as harmful to your back but im not a specialist.
 
stacked? Sorry I've been watching mma since tuf1 religiously ( I guess that makes me the problem with mma, but oh well) but I really don't know the terminology
 
if you have somone in a triangle or armbar from guard and they try to defend it by compressing by pushing your knees to your head

that and theres the double underhook guard pass which is kinda the same.
 
i would say no. take up muay thai or boxing, even kick boxing. youll still get a hell of a workout, and youll be able to handle yourself better. JMO

lay on your back on the floor and try to throw your feet over your head and touch the floor behind you. Now imagine a 200 pound guy doing it for your with all his weight.
 
Well, I'm just going to say that my back has been hurting for the last couple months. There's quite a lot of twisting and rolling and wrenching of your back. It's not that you're lifting or doing anything HEAVY on your back, but it does take a toll after while.

If you're just wanting to get into shape, I'd recommend a striking art. But I'd ask a doctor who knows more about combat sports.
 
Hey krait, I'm going to be moving to the DFW area soon, any ideas on some honest BJJ/Grappling instructors that would maybe give me a workout to see my limitations, like I said, I do very physical work for a living, so I may be a bit "tougher" (for lack of a better term) than my back problems let on

I'm in decent shape in comparison to the average person my size/age, I just want to try BJJ cause it looks really fun and I see that it is really mental...would be fun imo
 
You could always try it out and see, let people know that your back is iffy. The one positive thing for you will be that BJJ will seriously improve your core strength, which may help with your back. Strong hammies, abs, hip flexors, etc. will take a lot of pressure off of that area. But discs are a tough one, so be careful bud.

Prevents people from putting dangerous links/programs and so forth in their posts. That word needs to be included for the program or virus or whatever to run, so the only way to block that is to block the necessary word.

As far as your issue, one positive thing is that a lot of places offer a free trial class, which might be a good option to try it out, unless they try and pressure you to sign up and you don't want to. BJJ and grappling in general can be rough on the back, because it involves using your whole body and often relying on your core for strength, rather than just arms and legs. So it could be a problem.

That being said, I don't know of a single guy I train with that doesn't have some kind of nagging injury, be it from bjj or from work. A couple of guys I train with have knee issues, and shoulder problems as well. Above all, my instructor has had back problems similar to yours, and has had surgery on it, and is still not 100%. And he's a black belt and a damn good one at that, so maybe it wouldn't hold you back that much after all.
