No, you can be a good fighter and a champion without being a legend. Ultimately that word should describe the all time great champions, not just every champ with a few defenses. But his WEC run is also impressive, the talent at that time was absolutely right up there with the UFC LW division.
It's ridiculous how the term "legend" gets thrown around in the MMA world. The sport has been around for little over 2 decades in the US, and we probably already have something like 753 legends.

I think when he's done he will be, his story isn't finished...I understand most sherdoggers have the memory & foresight of a fish but he's achieved a lot and will likely go down a weightclass in which case he will probably fight for the title soon, if he wins he will be the only man with WEc, UFC & Bellator belts.
One of the best Lightweights ever? Yes. Welterweight, no.
The man beat Frankie Edgar x2, Cerrone x2 (shoulda been x3), Gilbert Melendez, Nate Diaz, Josh Thomson, Masvidal, Jim Miller when he was hot, etc.
Even if you think the Frankie or Melendez fights were the wrong decisions by judges, those fights in question were still hyper competitive with some of the best lightweights in UFC history. He went through a gauntlet of stiff competition and was a challenge for anyone until his reign ended.
Had one of the greatest championship runs every. Right behind Bones. Frankie x2, Nate, Gil, Josh, and lost to Pettis. No matter what happened tonight he should be remembered.
Edit: he beat Thomson after he lost to Pettis but still that's a hell of a streak. He also beat up Clay.
