Is any current fighter as big a superstar as Kimbo Slice at his peak?

Its sad that Kimbo is as recognized/popular as he is.

Such a short time period in the MMA world, but ya, based on numbers alone he drew viewers.

But is that really saying much?

If you made a fight with Brad Pitt vs. Gilbert Godfried, it would outdraw all the present MMA champs as well.

....would they be considered MMA fans new "needle movers" to??

Kimbo super popular? so what what the highest audience of any of his fights? 100k?

CM Punk is the biggest fighter UFC ever had apart from Brock, in terms of sheer recognisability with the general audience.

Kimbo is trailing the two of them, GSP, Anderson and R3 by miles.

Anderson, most people on these forums don't realize how mainstream he is in Brazil

if you define it by who the people know, then ronda rousey is the biggest name mma has ever seen. "the people" could only ever be described as casual, and never hardcore.

They should create another division for freakshows, like Freakweight or Showweight or what ever, to give boring but effective fighters a chance and still have the interesting fights.

Kimbo and Brock may be the biggest draws in UFC history. A fake wrestler and a internet street fighter. Pretty damn awesome.

It is strange looking back. As an MMA fan, it was surreal to hear one of my coworkers say "Isn't he the best fighter in the world?"

I don't think TS is crazy with his hypothesis.

Anyone know how the Kimbo Tuf numbers compared to the other seasons? iirc, Kimbo had a huge impact there as well, and that was after being humbled.

At his peak of popularity, Kimbo was bigger than any MMA fighter ever.

Kimbo vs Thompson was the biggest upset in the history of the sport

def a draw but the real definition of 'flash in the pan' at least as far as the ufc goes.

although i agree with what was said earlier in the thread, that he was cut pretty early and should have been given a little more time to train and develop.

Did he really dress like that for a picture, or is that shooped? That is pretty much what was behind Kimbo's popularity though, him triggering the "black brute" stereotype of an African American man. Gary Shaw was a big enough sleaze ball to capitalize on that.

I had a shitload of mates who knew Kimbo, but never watched him in the UFC.

Wanna know why?

Coz they were Youtube fans. Not fight fans. They stumbled across Kimbo on youtube but that's as far as it went - they weren't combat sports fans, they were fans of youtube videos that lots of people watched.

They squirmed when that guys eyeball was almost popping out. They cringed when Gannon ground Kimbo out. They had no desire to see this guy fight professionally, it was the equivalent of stumbling upon some brutal anal porn and sticking around for the money shot. They'd never revisit it.

The UFC assumed Kimbo would bring in all those type of viewers, and he didn't. I liked him though, chill dude and I rooted for him as he was a big underdog, despite what the promos and hype told us.
