In the case of men, being an Olympic medalist in wrestling or judo is very impressive. But in the case of women, I wonder if an Olympic medal in judo is more impressive than in wrestling. Judo is a very established international sport with lots of women participating. But wrestling! How established is wrestling among women at an international level?

Since Rousey is an Olympic medalist in judo, she has established herself as a high level martial artist on a large platform. McMann is an Olympic medalist in wrestling. At first blush, it looks like you have two very accomplished athletes and martial artists going head to head, and that maybe McMann's wrestling will neutralize Rousey's judo. But, is the field of competition in women's wrestling as deep as women's judo at an international level?

put it this way

mcmann won her medal the first year wrestling for women was at the Olympics in 2004

No idea how competitive womens wrestling is. But i give the grappling advantage to Rousey because Judo translate to BJJ way better than wrestling. BJJ evolved from Judo.

I would argue that since wrestlers dominate the landscape of MMA wrestling translates better to MMA than Judo.

I would argue wrestling is much more effective in MMA than judo regardless of the difficulty level of an Olympic medal.

Look at the success of wrestlers compared to judo fighters.

Not remotely as impressive. There are tons of countries who have very strong female judoka competitors. In wrestling, there are almost no countries that put out strong female wrestlers.

time limit favor wrestlers.

the cage favor wrestlers.

who knew wrestlers would dominate in the UFC?

Well there are 50 wrestlers to every 1 judoka in UFC so not a surprise.

Probobly because the judo fighters know that with no gi they are not as effective. Especially when fighting high-level wrestlers.

The talent pool in women's judo is exponentially deeper than in women's wrestling.

Whether wrestling translates better than judo does to MMA is completely irrelevant to the question at hand, but this is Sherdog, so I'm not surprised.

I don't think so. Its mostly because wrestling is way more popular in america and 70 percent of the fighters in UFC are americans.

Doubt it. McMann should try to keep it standing using her "wrestling in reverse". She should be much better at that than the weaker non-athletic Tate. Once it hits the ground I think it will be all Rousey. Davis would probably do better on the ground with her.

70%? Did you make that up.

Not saying its not true, but come on.

What % of that are wrestlers?

in womens, judo>wrestling
mens wrestling>judo

still medalling in either is a huge accomplishment and requires insane athleticismg

I don't think they are holding a BJJ match, right?
