beat every top 10 ranked wrestler in his division as a champion? Obviously I don't count the Brown fight since he wasn't the champ going in. But he did beat Edgar, Lamas, Faber, and Mendes. I could be wrong but has anyone else done this?

Who did Jones miss? Also Silva? GSP?

GSP had a striking base. People assume he wrestled, but before entering mma GSP had no wrestling background

it should be noted he beat Brown to become the CHAMP. also I heard he's got some legit grappling credentials outside of MMA. black belt in Luta Livre.

He beat Cobrinha twice at purple belt a long time ago - so his bjj is absolutely legit. Cobrinha being the best in the world for several years.

Aldo came from BJJ. He is a fantastic striker but it's not where he came from like a Machida or Wonderboy or even Conor.

I thought Aldo's base was bjj? And, that was the reason he could be so free with/dedicate so much time to working on his striking, kinda like RDA's recent success? Of course we have guys like Hendo, who were world class wrestlers, then worked on their striking and lost their wrestling. It is so rare to see a guy like prime Aldo, Jones, MM, that are excellent and incredibly fluid in all disciplines. When you work on one craft you generally lose something in the others; pair that with a small window athletic prime and we have the reason why the belts have been exchanging hands like a hot potato.

Jones is not a wrestling based fighter.

Maybe not an elite wrestling base, but certainly wrestling based ;-)

?

He wrestled in college, it was mostly what he was known for early in his career (throws especially) along with his wild striking style (which he has since refined into what we see now). He may be more of a kickboxer these days but he's able to so because of his wrestling prowess.

That doesn't matter he primarily used his wrestling in MMA lol

Good thing TS asked about people that were striking based and not 100% dedicated strikers. GSP's base was karate, yea he mostly wrestled in mma, but that doesn't change the fact that he had a striking base and had no background in wrestling before his mma career

Silva lost his belt to a wrestler

Weidman was the next generation of opponents, sooner or later everybody loses.

Silva cleaned out his division before Weidman came on the scene, including a list of very good wrestlers (Henderson, Sonnen, Okami, Maia).

Yes he wrestled. But in my opinion his "style" is far from wrestling based. Liddell was a wrestler also, but not many would say he was primarily a wrestler.

Honestly, I think the OP could have been worded differently.

Thread doesn't make sense. You're using Aldo as a striking based fighter, but his base is BJJ. If it's a case of it being what styles fighters use the most, then Jones is a striker.

Chuck Liddell is the original wrestler killer.
