Is 28 years old (male) too old to start learning MMA? I have some background in Judo and just regular fighting in pubs but other than that complete novice.

I am 5’7 and weigh 210lbs (17% bodyfat).

I would not be looking to “compete”, just to learn and socialise/ have fun. But many clubs I contacted said I’m too old. Thanks.

88!?!?! You are basically on hospice. Nobody sane would start to train someone who is 88 years old.

I'm going to say its very unlikely you have been turned away by a gym because you are too old. These places are not making enough to give up a potential paying member. You're likely just nervous to go to one, and that's okay, but know there are literally specific divisions in Amatuers for people much older than you so the likelihood you're going to be discriminated against for your age is slim to zero.

First of all you're not even too old to compete. Too old to have world champion aspirations maybe, but you can still compete and it's already meaningful that you've done Judo and streetfighting before (the latter is dumb though).

Too start to join an MMA gym? 100% no.

I have never heard of this. I know of a 46-year-old who started training a few years ago to turn his life around and took 3 amateur fights and got stopped three times but the point is he wasn't turned away even though he wanted to try cage fighting out. The entire community was behind that man, and everyone supported him, he did get knocked out badly twice though. It's the same place I took my amateur fights and a lot of the videos are still on Facebook. It is a lot of stuff to sift through though. Proving Grounds MMA, I cannot for the life of me remember the dude's name. I also recall seeing a 51-year-old guy go pro and fight a few times with the King of the Cage promotion. Unless you walked into a gym specifically for kids, I think you could go back and speak with one of instructors and see what is up. If that is their attitude that is pretty odd though, I know a lot of people who started competing in jiu jitsu tournaments in their 30s and 40's who trained for less than a year. I took my first ammy cage fight out of shape, in the wrong weight class, on 3 weeks notice, with a broken toe, a burned foot from cooking in grease the night before, and I hadn't trained in 2 years. I had literally 6 people who either owned gyms or fight teams offer me to come train after my fight. I had just gotten engaged so I had a lot of "happy weight" at the time. lol

You know, I feel that maybe if you told them about your street fighting experience, depending on how you described it, it could have turned them off. People who brag about that are often trouble makers in a gym.

If you want to learn to socialize and have fun, it makes no sense telling them that you are a regular pub fighter.

I don't believe one second they declined because you are too old. Very few (zero?) MMA gyms in the UK are competitive enough to turn down a 28 years old beginner.

and just regular fighting in pubs

Too old for learning? No. Too old to compete? No. Too old to be an elite or even high level MMA fighter? Most likely.

i miss when trolls put more effort into their threads.

You are never too old. Key is: Start with it. Others didnt, thats the fault.

You are way too old. It's time to retire.

Perfect time to start! I see a lot of older beginners (40+) at my boxing gym weekly

You are def. too old, pick up a realistic hobby like arranging flowers or dusting books

Too old?! No way!
I'm 40 and still train regularly. Honestly, it keeps me young.

My mom said I was too old when I was like 18 lol. Any gym that said that is nuts. I'm 31 now and just started boxing training and I actually want to compete. Not saying WBC champ or even necessarily pro but Amateur at the very least. You could still compete and maybe even win a belt in a smaller promotion at that age, perhaps too old if you have UFC champ dreams but just for training?? You're plenty young enough.

God no, thats prime.
