IRS audits more poor people than rich people...because it's easier.

You'd have to eliminate the accountants too, or they would just recreate what they know.

Accountants may be the dumbest smart people I ever worked with.

To be sure, it's better than erasure of the market altogether. But this is one of many instances where it's largely the legal profession that drives up administrative costs for agencies and creates this sot of incentive. Rich folks pay thousands to lawyers who throw up roadblocks on government collections and save the rich folks millions.

As pan said, they are cashing on accounts that are likely to pay out on very little legwork. Meanwhile, auditing someone like Trump is going to get several law firms up your ass and take exorbitant resources.

A bird in the hand versus two in the bush, etc.

This is a long entrenched shctick of the right, to shit on the working and middle class and go to bat for the very rich. Just like how those calling for Universal H.C. and more social safety nets are attacked by some on the right as Communists / Socialists / Anti American.

The very rich have plenty of average Joes fighting for them against other average Joes. Rush Limbaugh , for decades, has been preaching to regular Joes to oppose that which benefits regular Joes and instead fight for the interests of the very rich.

I have to agree but a small (VERY VERY small) part of me has sympathy for the IRS (hear me out) on this point. They have their budgets slashed every year and really don't have the resources to audit the complex tax returns.

And I do believe that is by design. Rich, well connected folks with complex returns and multiple revenue streams LOVE getting away with paying less tax. Of course a party who believes the rich pay too much tax wants to de-fang the audit wing of the IRS.

Exactly. Why is there an effort to create a toothless IRS, particularly for wealthy tax payers? Seems obvious to me - it creates an environment that allows abuse to go unchecked.

What's one joke about gov't workers?

    That's the IRS all over.

They will advance someone with zero corporate tax experience, or understanding into corp-auditor positions.

Exxon Mobil hires the top 3% of accounting graduates. Comparatively the IRS hires anyone with a pulse. That's like pitting the slackers against the validictorians in a debate competition.

And even if a good agent gets them on something, they can appeal it where it's likely to go they way since the gov't appeals are even lazier and more inept than the regular IRS.

My wife does corporate tax for the IRS. Her boss revealed to her she closed 68% of all cases out of her group of 14 agents last year.

Yes listen to this guy. He knows exactly what to do to turn America into a post apocalyptic crap hole. No taxes would work wonders to improve America and fund our many institutions.

I don't think the wealthy really cheat on their tax returns that much.

Why bother, plenty of tax concessions for the wealthy.

My dad earns about 3 triple my income, has hmm 30 times my net assets and pays about a quarter as much tax. He isn't even aggressive.

Imo the costs of tax avoidance (illegal) are immaterial compared with tax minimisation (legal).

The federal government collects nearly $4T in taxes but hey, it will save $11B. Good work bud.

There are more poor people, poor people do their own taxes or pay cheap places like H and R block to do them. Rich people hire CPA's or better who make less mistakes.

    Earth is flat too
